Dr. Jay snubbing Larry and Lebron:

Dr.J’s top 10 players of all time (no order)

Jerry West
Oscar Robertson
Elgin Baylor
Wilt Chamberlain
Bill Russell
Michael Jordan
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Magic Johnson
Karl Malone
Tiny Archibald

That is a pretty cool list. A bit different. I like that.

I know Doc has rated Kareem as the #1 player in NBA history because of his longevity and how he played at such a high level for such a long period of time. I imagine that line of thought played a similar role for the selection of Karl Malone.

The Tiny one is the surprising selection. He was incredible at his peak. Unstoppable. But his peak was so short due to injuries. Doc must have really loved his game to include him here. I'd love to know more about why Doc chose Tiny.

ESPN is closing in on promoting Doris Burke to the NBA Finals, hiring Doc Rivers to join her and jettisoning Mark Jackson to the “B” team or off the network, The Post has learned. In the wake of Jeff Van Gundy’s firing in late June, ESPN set their eyes on making Burke the first woman TV analyst on the NBA Finals and hiring Rivers to join Hall of Fame play-by-player, Mike Breen.

Sources said Jackson could stay on and join play-by-player Mark Jones on the network’s second team. If he balks at that option, he could be headed out of ESPN. -via Andrew Marchand @ New York Post

Sources also told the Inquirer that former Sixers J.J. Redick is expected to call more NBA games this season, in addition to his role as a studio analyst. Redick was hired by ESPN in 2021 and his presence as part of the network’s NBA coverage has grown each season, including regular appearances on First Take with Stephen A. Smith. – via Rob Tornoe @ The Philadelphia Inquirer

Lol, speaking of disrespecting someone. It's Dr. J...not Dr. Jay.

Anyways, I have no issue with his list, as it's his own opinion. My list would certainly be different, but it wouldn't mean my list was better.

Our Mark Jackson national nightmare is close to being over.

If ESPN/ABC was gonna overhaul the #1 team, they should send Breen out to pasture also.  He's been the head play by play guy for nearly two decades.  Time to bring in some new blood.  Wishful thinking on my part.

If 2023 playoffs Doris is the version of Doris we're getting, that's not good.  She was atrocious in the BOS-PHI series last playoffs.

I feel so bad for Mike Breen that he now has Doris and Doc (ugh). I hate Mark Jackson a ton but are these two really the best options?? They should have kept JVG at least and demoted Jackson

While I respect the take, I've always strongly disagreed with the "all opinions have equal value".  They don't, and leaving Larry Bird off a list of the top-10 players ever devalues his opinion entirely.

I'd love for someone to ask Doc why he left Bird off. Did he just forget Bird when making the list? Did he leave Bird off because of how he fared individually against him? Or felt his team did against Bird's team?

Doc was, what, 2-1 in playoff series in the early 80s. Three close series with Doc having the upper hand. Did not meet in 1983 when Philly were their strongest. Did not matchup in 1984. 1985 when Philly were strong but in semi-transition (working in rookie Barkley, injured and in major decline Toney) or in 1986 when Moses was injured in the playoffs. 2-2 overall in the playoffs.

I know when Doc is asked to give his All-Time five he only names guys he grew up watching and not any of his contemporaries or anyone that came after him. He only picked guys he grew up watching and admiring like Elgin Baylor. I wonder if something like that was a factor in his list. Only 3 guys came into the league after Doc in Magic, MJ and K Malone. The other 7 came in before Doc. Although Tiny and Kareem were only just before Doc went to the ABA but that was another 4-5 years until Doc joined the NBA.

It would just be interesting to hear his reasoning.

I know Doc is a huge MJ fan. He'd always be on those Finals panels in the early 90s. I am guessing he admires Karl Malone for similar reasons as Kareem for maintaining such high standards for 20yrs and finishing as the league's 2nd all time scorer. Magic beat Doc in the Finals 2-1 and won 5 titles in the 80s. I'm sure that 42pt 15reb 7ast effort as a rookie to win the Finals against Doc went a long way to solidifying Magic in Doc's eyes. Inspiring probably the most stylish basketball team of their era if not all time.

Most of all, I just want to hear why he put Tiny in there. What did he love so much about Tiny? How good did he think Tiny would've been without the injuries? Fair chance he'd have been the best little man to ever play the game.

This just in: Mark Jackson told me he was let go by ESPN. He had two years left on his contract. Jeff Van Gundy was let go weeks ago. Doc Rivers and Doris Burke are now Mike Breen’s partners…

Wow, this seems strange.  Doris Burke and Doc Rivers are not going to be all that much better, if better at all.  I don't know how the contracts work but this feels like cost cutting.

Jackson sucked. His act wore thin years ago and he brought very little to telecasts besides the banter with JVG.   He was full of cliches and cheesy taglines.

God help the fans of Sixers opponents this year. It’s going to be an Embiid love fest every night they’re on air.

If I'm not mistaken, Dr J didn't name any small forward from his own era or after. Elgin Baylor is the only SF on his list.

I do agree with you. Any top 10 list, has to include Bird (and Magic and Jordan).

No offense to Tiny, who was great, but I don't see how someone can think that Tiny was better than Bird.
