If we can’t get an Oubre, what about a second look at Romeo? Still think the kid has some potential as a backup 3 and D wing. If I remember right, he was really coming into his own the year we traded him until he hurt his ankle.

My theory:

We are trading Brogdon and draft capital to the Hornets for PJ Washington in a SnT. This will include a wink wink deal that the Hornets will buy out Hayward, who will then sign with the Celtics.

If we did a S&T to bring somebody in, we'd be hard-capped at $172,346,000.

Right now, our payroll is $177,459,126, along with around $2 million in unlikely incentives.  So, around $179.4 million.  I think we've also got another roster spot we have to fill, so let's call it $180.5 million.

Dumping Brogdon's salary would bring payroll to $158-ish million.  So, theoretically, we could give Washington a deal of around $13 million in your scenario, and could bring in a bought out Hayward.

But:

1.  Why does Charlotte want Brogdon;

2.  If Washington will take a MLE-ish deal, why doesn't Charlotte just keep him;

3.  Is White / Pritchard a good enough point guard combo?

So, to be optimistic, if we compared roles from this year to last:

Center #1 Timelord = Timelord
PF #1 Porzingis > Horford
SF #1 Tatum = Tatum
SG #1 Brown = Brown
PG #1 White = Smart

Center #2 Horford = Horford
PF #2 Horford > Grant
SF #2 Hauser = Hauser
SG #2  Pritchard < White
PG #2 Brogdon = Brogdon

In theory, with Horford moving to a full-time bench role, he replaces much of what Grant was giving us, and even upgrades.  As of right now, the only real spot we've downgraded is backup SG, where Pritchard is replacing D. White's role (because D. White is replacing Smart).

Feels like a Brogdon trade is inevitable at this point.

If so, I’d love to revisit with LAC if they don’t go down the Harden route. I’d really love to try and get Powell and one of their backup swings in Covington or Batum for our fourth big, though that’d take a bit more salary to add with Brogdon which would take away one of our core players.

Replacing Brogdon with Powell and Covington would be a nice two for one for us and give LAC a full time starting point guard that better fits their roster than Westbrook.

Well, you can even make the case that Tatum will take another leap this year and be better than last year. You’ll probably see that more in his overall efficiency, playmaking, and rebounding than scoring, but I think he trends up in all those categories with another year of development. Porzingis helping draw attention will help too.

Unless you are getting real value for Brogdan you keep him. Don't dump to dump.

I don’t see how they can swing that with the 2nd apron issue. They’d have to take back less salary for in a deal for Brogdon.

yes as the cap may rise 10 each year, and probably will as they are negotiating a new tv deal, also the pick stuff doesn't start till next year, and you are allowed 2 years out of 4 years to be over the cap. so they would have had to duck underneath the cap in 3 years time, at which stage the grant's contract would an expiry and represent around 8% of the cap (the equivalent of a 10 million dollar contract today.).

I feel pretty good about White as an upgrade at PG#1.

Does trading Grant really mean that the Celtics don’t want to cross that second apron? What if there’s an incoming trade for a serviceable guy that actually does make us breach the second apron? This is of course assuming that Brad has the green light to spend. Sorry if this doesn’t make sense as I don’t really understand the intricacies of our salary cap situation. Just saying maybe Brad is in the hunt for a Grant upgrade this the abundance of second round picks.
