Wyc is cheap.
It's funny, pretty much all season we've heard from fans and friendly media that the Celtics will be the #1 choice of a lot of buyout candidates, because of their championship aspirations and because they had a big chunk of money to throw at free agents.
Now that appears that budgetary restraints are keeping the team from spending that money, it's "free agents care about role more than winning" and "money isn't that important".
Even beyond the narrative, it's very surprising to me that the team hasn't noticed any holes since Vonleh's trade in January. We've seen a 30-game slump by Hauser, Grant Williams at times playing very poorly, injuries to Smart and Brown, ongoing rest needs for Timelord, Horford and Tatum... but there isn't a single free agent that wants to play here, even for 3x - 6x the salary every other team is offering?
Our 15th man will be Tony Snell, signed on the last day of the regular season, to keep our cap hit to around $50k or so. And with that, one of the likely hidden goals of the season will be accomplished: the payroll on the last day of the season will be lower than it was on the first day.
