Why haven't we signed a 15th guy yet? I can't really figure out what we'd be waiting for. I'd like a solid hustle guy for the rest of the season.

Not sure. Stanley Johnson and Barton are still out there (and others)

I'd take either of those guys as well as Juan Toscano-Anderson.

Presumably the guys they're waiting on are trying to pick the best landing spots for themselves.  Also, anyone else released in the next couple of days would become available.  I'd prefer Barton or Stanley Johnson, but don't be surprised if Nerlens Noel gets bought out as well.  He's been away from the Pistons since prior to the ASB.

Yeah, there's no good reason to fill the spot before we see who is released by March 1.  And, we could have outstanding offers to free agents right now.

Also of note:  every day that goes by with an open roster spot saves the team salary and luxury tax.  Each day we wait saves a bit over $52,500 in salary and tax.

I think we've had an open roster spot since January 5, when we traded Vonleh.  If that's accurate, we've saved almost $3 million by not filling the spot.

We probably only need that 15th man during this stretch run. They won't even sniff the court in the playoffs.

Because we don't have an actual role for anybody.  We already have a couple of decent players who don't get minutes.  We're basically looking for an emergency guy to sit behind the other emergency guys.

Most NBA journeymen still want to play, and we can't realistically offer that opportunity.  We'll eventually pick somebody, but I wouldn't expect a useful piece tbh.  Just somebody who can try hard for 5-10 minutes if crap really hits the fan.

I think we could have at least used a 10-day contract for some of the recent games where depth was an issue.  We came out of it okay, but a fresh body while JB and Smart were out would have made sense.

Agree with this. It’s really a fit thing. As fans we would love to have a guy who can competently play as an 8th man if needed but is willing to sit the pine Blake Griffin style until he is needed, which could be never. It’s hard to find that type of person for a minimum wage  :-\

I feel like it's about playing time. Need a vet who is willing to be in the Blake/PP/Musky roll at SF. If we are going to look at season and playoffs that SF spot is where a new player slots in.

PG minutes
Smart, White, Brogdon, PP

SG minutes
Brown, Brogdon, White

Small Forward minutes
Tatum, Brown, Hauser, "Vet"

PF minutes
Al, Grant, Tatum, Musky

Center minutes
TL, Al, Kornet, Musky

So basically need a guy to push Hauser that is still okay with DNPs. Not a lot of buy out guys looking for a reduced roll.

I think offering $3.24 million, as opposed to the $500k other teams can offer, would go a long way toward compensating for that diminished role.
