The US needs to find a top level scorer. It was a real problem all tournament. Dutch have 3 top level scorers and it showed immensely.
Taylor Twellman also tweeted that apparently in the U.S. roster of 26, they had just 3 forwards
Umm...
We've never had world class strikers though. Even Landon Donovan was mainly deployed as a winger or a false 8. Clint Dempsey was probably our best ever traditional 9 even though he also played on the wing a lot. It's a position we've always lacked depth in.
The cupboard is bare. Josh Sargent was probably our hottest option coming in to the WC and I thought he was decent. But he plays for a 2nd Division club in England and was a total non-factor last year when Norwich was in the Premier League.
The rest? Fereira had a decent season in MLS but was by no means dominant. He can improve but he's not world class. Hadji Wright's heavy touch when he had the keeper out of position today sums up his ability. Then you have guys like Jordan Peefok and Ricardo Pepe who I think are at the same level as all these other guys. One was just as good as another so if you're the manager you pick 3 and hope for the best.
We need someone at the level of guys like Pulisic, McKennie, Dest - that level of player - who's a striker. That guy would be able to score goals against any level of opponent.
Right now he doesn't exist. The hope is that one of the names I mentioned can kick it up a couple of levels in the next 4 years - or some pheenom comes along who's 14 or 15 years old right now.
