Regarding the Pelicans-Suns skirmish , I'm just glad to see good old legit rivalries back in the NBA. I was getting tired of the league where all the players are best friends with the opposing players off the court and don't really go at each other on the court. When a team beats you on your own home floor and you are supposed to have title aspirations, you should be very angry instead of hanging out with them right afterwards like it was a pickup game in your backyard. This is more like it.

Like the way you think !!

ESPN Sources: Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham – the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft – plans to have season-ending surgery on his left shin. Cunningham is expected to make a full recovery ahead of training camp in 2023-2024.

Interesting that the DPOY award is named after Hakeem, who was a marvelous defender but who won only half as many DPOYs as Dikembe or Ben Wallace.

George Mikan is an odd choice for most improved, since he led the league in scoring his rookie year.

At first Hakeem seems a little odd to me, his name's not really synonymous with DPOY, like Dikembe or Ben Wallace (or even Dwight Howard).

But then you notice George Mikan (MIP?), Wilt Chamberlain (ROY), too, and they're probably just working down the list of retired all time greats seeing who would fit best and doesn't already have an award, and in Mikan's case throwing him a bone.

I don’t like it, yet another example of the NBA becoming about perception not substance.

Kareem has the most MVP’s, yet it’s named after Jordan? It’s a marketing and PR decision, not a basketball one.

Kareem already has an award though.  The Social Justice Champion Award.

Even though the MVP is clearly more prestigious, I like to think if we asked Kareem, would you rather be remembered for MVP awards or Social Justice, he'd pick Social Justice.

They're spreading these out.

Next they'll probably start naming individual season leader awards.  John Stockton assist award, Dikembe Mutombo (or maybe Tim Duncan) block award.  If they wait a few years the Kevin Durant scoring leader award (would be perfect for Wilt, but now his name is already off the board), the Chris Paul steals leader, Russell Westbrook triple double leader.  Only a matter of time before we get the LeBron lifetime achievement award.

Kareem already had an award named after him.  The Social Justice Champion Award.  So did Russell, Bird, Magic, Kobe, and a bunch of other players and it appears they aren't going to double up (since no one is doubled up).

So the only ones I think you could question are DPOY after Hakeem and Most Improved after Mikan.  Mikan in particular is very strange since he basically entered the league as the best player in the world and was until he retired the first time.  Hakeem, while not winning the award as much as some other players, is also widely regarded as one of the best defenders in league history, especially when Bill already had an award named after him, Hakeem is a fine choice (I'd have probably gone with Rodman, but he isn't in the same class of player as Hakeem, so I'm not particularly bothered by it, plus Rodman has some off court issues).

Yeah, lifetime achievement is the only award that isn't named after a person and it does seem like they intentionally did that to name it after Lebron.  And frankly that makes a great deal of sense.

I like your other ones, perhaps Rodman for rebounding since he didn't get the DPOY.

Should have been Bill Russell on the MVP and DPOY awards.  the bedrock of a franchise that wins 11 titles in 13 years is the unquestionable MVP and he's by far the best defensive player ever.   also, lifetime achievement should be Russell as well.  Lebron isn't getting his number retired throughout the league.

this concept of distributing a different name for every 'award' is PR foolishness

I dont think it is. The more diverse it is, the more distinguishable each award is and the more prestigious it becomes. I know I'm on a Celtics board but I honestly feel MVP should be MJ.

It's cool that they're naming MVP after MJ.

Word is there's already plans to name an award after LeBron, and what better to give him than Executive of the Year.

Multiple league sources said the Suns recently engaged in three-team talks that would have sent Crowder to Milwaukee, four Bucks second-round draft picks along with players to Houston, and Eric Gordon and/or Kenyon Martin Jr. to Phoenix. The hold up in the potential three-teamer was that the Rockets are coveting one first-round pick for Gordon, and for Martin a very good first-rounder, not a batch of second-rounders, according to sources. The Rockets have had interest in Gordon from several contending teams, sources said, but appear less willing to entertain the topic of Martin.

Other publications have suggested that Crowder was "nearly traded", on "the verge of being traded", etc.  From the above report, that doesn't sound like a trade was all that close.

why would anyone give up a 1st round pick for Gordon.  I'm not even sure anyone would give up a 1st rounder for Martin, but that is at least arguable.
