Imagine actively looking at a team like the Lakers and thinking "yes, this is a place I want to work."

Yeah, haha. On the other hand, being stuck in Indiana on a rebuilding team can’t be ideal, either. Probably just wants to be in LA for the lifestyle more than anything.

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

How will Indiana react to this? Do they stand firm with the 2 picks in return?

I certainly would.

Totally.  Turner’s telling the Lakers to give up the picks for him — that’s not going to hurt Indiana’s position.

Maybe I didn't read carefully enough but it doesn't sound like he was asking for a trade.  He was basically asked if he thinks he's worth including two picks in a trade for him.  "I wouldn't trade two draft picks for myself".  Who would ever say that?

Do you think they will get a 1st for Turner and a 1st for Hield from someone else.  I mean that is what Indiana has to think, right?

It’s also possible the pacers like having a few vets are all their young guys. Having Shooters like hield and turner makes Halliburton’s development easier.

Also for it is worth Westbrook has been effective off bench the last few games.

Screw two picks.  If I was getting sent to the craptastic Lakers, I'd say I was worth four firsts, three swaps, and a couple of prospects.  Lol.

Hield and M Turner do not make LAL a contender. Maybe next year but not this year. The rest of their team is too badly constructed to get LAL into the title mix this season.

I would still do the deal if I were LAL. This is about as good an opportunity as they can hope to get to become a title contender again with LeBron on the roster. Worth taking.

If the Pacers traded Hield and Turner, they still have other vets with McConnel, Theis, and Johnson. They’d also be receiving Westbrook as well. If you can get two first round picks from LA for Hield and Turner, that’s a good haul. Especially with how badly the Lakers have been playing this year.

I think something may come open later in the season as teams struggle. For example if the 76ers or heat are really struggling along maybe they get someone like butler. They also may be better of just trading AD. AD already has a chronic back issue flaring up 2 weeks into the season.

Yeah can’t fault him there I suppose.

The NBA has taken away the 76ers‘ second round picks in 2023 and 2024 for early free agency discussions last offseason.

You are probably correct, but that trade would make them a lot better this year, and with Lebron's age and Davis being made of glass, they can't just let seasons go by without trying something.  The Lakers haven't been willing to include both picks because they think they will be able to get something better for both picks and Westbrook.  And who knows, maybe they will be able to.  They could expand the trade with the Pacers though and get more useful players back

these all work financially, for example

Turner, Hield, Theis for Westbrook

Turner, Hield, McConnell for Westbrook

Turner, Hield, Theis, McConnell for Westbrook

Not that Theis or McConnell moves the needle a bunch, but they are solid veterans for the bench.  The Lakers can then consolidate some of their other contracts into other players that could be on the move

I do appreciate that the NBA is starting to levy actual penalties against teams for this.  It’s not a huge sanction, but it’s more than a slap on the wrist.

How do the salaries work with a traded player with respect to when during the season they're traded?

If Westbrook were traded now would the other team have to pay 76/82nds of his salary (accounting for the 76 games he'd be on their roster)?

So if they waited until the trade deadline they'd only owe him less than half of this year's salary?

That would seem like an incentive to teams, to also be able to save several millions of dollars.

But I may be wrong about how that works.
