  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
Regarding the power dynamic, other than choosing his assistant coaches (who are all men) what power does he have in that regard?

I mean...what power does Jayson Tatum have within the organization beyond shot selection when he's allowed to play? Udoka clearly commands a fair bit of power and influence here.

Per Brandon Robinson:

“Boston Celtics coach Ime Udoka and his partner are believed to have been separated prior to current issue sources tell @BallySports

Celtics players have been aware of current issue with their coach for a couple of days & were briefed earlier this week.”

Ime certainly looks like a scum bag as he and Nia were very likely still together during the finals. There were videos showing her cheering for Udoka and the Celtics on social media. Believe she was also at some of the games.
Don't forget, he's also an ex player. In pro sports in general there's a lot of this. There was a former NESN sideline reporter who helped break up Jason Varitek's first marriage.  John Farrell did the same thing - I believe while married.
And those are just two local examples.

Other than Brogdan this off-season has been a disaster.

Eh, not sure I agree. Gallo=overrated regular season player. Rob Williams had a cleanup procedure. I think that’s a good thing. I’m excited about Brogdon, and so is Vegas. The Celtics are in great shape.

I agree with CIO, in that, if you exclude the fantastic Brogdon trade (which of course you can't do in an overall evaluation) the off-season has been a bad one.

We went into the off-season with a $17.1 million TPE, the Taxpayer MLE, a couple of other TPEs, and several open roster slots.

We've come out of the off-season getting no production from our T-MLE, we let the big TPE expire, and we've filled the roster slots with fringe NBA players.  We've upgraded at backup PG in a big way, but we've downgraded at backup center.  Now, our starting center is out for perhaps a month, assuming he heals correctly (i.e., not like Lonzo Ball).  And, our really good coach who the team had bonded with is gone for as much as a season.

To me, that's a disaster.  It's not "a Brown gouged Tatum's eye out in a cage match" disaster, but it's pretty bad.

Complaining about nonuse of $17mm TPE is unfair. You have no idea who was available and at what cost. We had just landed Gallo and Brogdan and would have been foolish to shell out $70 mm for a one year bench rental.

I agree.  I'm not worked up about not using the 17M TPE as I don't no who they'd have gotten and I don't know who they still may get to round out the roster.  I do know that as of the day before Gallo was injured (actually, the day before the report of the ACL came out) I was more excited about the upcoming season than any in a very long time.  More so than the anticipation of Gordon Hayward's first year.

What has happened in the last few weeks is one bad break (Gallo), one minor setback (Rob, which would have been a minor thing had it not been preceded by the Gallo injury), and this apparent breach of organization policy by a team role model.  I'd say that the totality of these occurrences has dampened the excitement considerably.  But... we are less than 24 hours past the Ime bombshell and I think it's wise to let the fallout play out before declaring a disaster.

Yeah, the Globe, WEEI, NBC Boston, NESN.  All had examples.  The irony of them covering this story now.

What a roller coaster this off-season has been and ultimately turning into a downward spiral.

While we dont know the story, I agree that a season long suspension for an assumed 'consensual' relationship, even if it involved infidelity, is absolutely ludicrous.. Which is why i think there is more to it and an impending lawsuit on the way.

If we are suspending him for the season we need to just fire him and move on.

I hope you're right. It's all just a little deflating...

Seems heavy handed when Ime was single and not in a relationship anymore with nia long. Suspend 15 games. An entire season makes zero sense whatsoever for a consensual in house relationship

IF Joe M. does well Ime might be gone for good.

I don’t think it matters if he had a relationship. What matters is that he had a “consensual” relationship with a subordinate.

Just having a consensual relationship is worth 82 games, the playoffs and maybe his job if Joe M. Does very well? Just seems like way too much

I didn't know he was single.  A full season is a lot for a consensual relationship.  I'm sure team rules are against this and for good reason but if the other party is willing to sign an affidavit stating this and both parties sign waivers (which any HR dept would do to cover the company) then there has to be more to this.  A single guy dating a work happens a lot.  I was thinking he was engaged and cheating.

She was at the finals, sitting court side, cheering for the Celtics. So I have no idea why CIO keeps saying that he was single. Considering she’s a pretty famous actress and he’s the head coach of an NBA team, pretty sure we would have heard about them breaking up.

Quoting Nick from the now locked Ime thread:

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

If Mazzulla doesn’t do well by the All Star Break I can see Brad doing a Pat Riley and taking over the coaching chores. This team is too talented to just waste the season.

Because that was June and this is almost October. Plenty of time for them to call it quits. Just going by what other people have tweeted. Said that relationship had ended before the one with the Celtics staffer started.

I’m not sure why people are concerning themselves with infidelity. That doesn’t matter to the organization. What matters is that a higher up was with a subordinate. This doesn’t fly in most professions.
