What happened to Damar Hamlin is obviously unfortunate. However, the only thing that was unprecedented was how the rest of the Buffalo team handled the situation, and decided they couldn't continue playing.

The Buffalo Bills should concede the game and take the loss. Do not put the rest of the NFL in the current position of trying to make something up to fix this situation.

I just heard the owners approved the NFLs proposal. Whoever wins the Superbowl will have an asterisk on the championship.

Cincy didn’t want to resume play either, though.

I was under the impression that the Bengals players and coaches were understanding of the situation and didn't want to put the Bills in a tough spot to resume play.

I don't think they were anxious to resume the game, but definitely they wanted to let the Bills take the lead on it.

That's not really what's being reported.  The talk I've seen is that neither team wanted to resume the game that night, and that neither team has wanted the game to be rescheduled.  In fact, I think it was Zac Taylor who approached McDermott about pulling the teams off the field.  The NFLPA said that they never even considered allowing the game to resume.

It's hard to put this solely on the Bills.

That is an interesting question.  Was it the Bills that really dictated that the game wouldn't be played?  It would be understandable if that was the case.

I don't think anyone is really being all that disadvantaged here though.  KC is probably going to get the bye when if they had played the whole game, there is a good chance the Bills win and then they would be in control of the #1 seed.  So KC should have no complaint.  There are a lot of scenarios but I don't see how this is all that big a deal for CIN.  I guess if they win against BUF, they get home field vs. Baltimore but they have a chance to beat them anyway.  If it comes down to a coin flip and they lose, have to play in BAL, and lose, then yeah, they would have a gripe.  But they will have had 2 chances to be them head to head to make this all moot.

I suspect that if CIN wanted to, they could have lined up and said they were ready to play and then if BUF decided not to continue, then it is a forfeit and CIN gets the win.  But that isn't what happened, or at least that is not how it appears.  I see no need for any asterisks.  Buffalo and KC are probably going to meeting in the AFC Championship on a neutral field.  That seems fair enough to me.

I do think Cincinnati has gotten the shaft (assuming they beat Baltimore).  They were more likely than not going to beat Buffalo on Monday.  They were up 7-3 and had just crossed mid-field.  They were at home (the only home game they've lost was week 1 in OT to the steelers).  They are on a 7 game winning streak and have generally looked like the best team in football over the last month or so.  Had they beaten Buffalo they would have worst been the 2 seed with a shot at the 1 seed if the Chiefs lose to the Raiders.  Instead of that, they are locked in as the 3 seed with potentially a road playoff game on wild card weekend.  That just doesn't seem fair, especially the weird coin flip rule change.  It is hard to make everyone happy when a game is cancelled, but there is an existing rule for cancelled games.  I'm not sure why the NFL decided to change their rules mid-season when a rule actually exists.  They should have just handled the cancellation as the rules provide.  Sure that does some teams a potential disservice, but not as much as what they did and they've now set a precedent to change rules mid-season (which can have drastic long term consequences).

Won't be an asterisk if KC wins cuz having to play in neutral site instead of in KC lol. But I do hope Cincy wins it as they are innocently getting grilled the most for no reason.

Ofc, if for some reason the Pats make it to the SB then yes by all means win it and no asterisks  ;D

I can guarantee, when all is said & done, there won't be an asterisk.  That's just a fan thing.

Meh. It's already a reality that the Super Bowl is (nearly-)always played at a neutral site, so losing out on a home playoff game isn't exactly unprecedented.

Though, to be honest, I don't think it's fair to have the Super Bowl at a predetermined neutral site. But that's another discussion.

Here is Phantom255x's hot take

I think they won't agree to this scenario that was presented yesterday evening, and ultimately they will have an 8-team playoffs (each conference - so 16 total teams) and zero byes or bye-teams

Well never mind then...

Owners voted to continue with those changes. The proposal got 25 yes votes, and they needed 24 for it to go through so they passed that threshold

Sorry Bengals and @birdman (and other Bengals fans)...  :(

They won on the road last year. They'll be able to do it again. After all, "A playoff series don't start until you win on the road"  ;D

I think it’s worth considering that AFC and NFC championship games get played on neutral fields.  Home field is a huge advantage and getting the bye is often strongly impacted by the strength/weakness of a team’s division.

That won’t happen.
The idea of adding another playoff team given how weak possible #7 seeds are is just unnecessary.

The NFL basically incentivized teams to force the opponent to forfeit (or continue playing) even if the opposing player has a life/death situation on the field. CIN did everything right and still were the team that got absolutely boned from this ridiculous NFL ruling
