Whiteside and j.jackson

I don't love Whiteside, as he's an empty stats guy.  I'm holding out for Bryant.

Jackson would be a good get, if he's willing to humble himself to a 10 - 15 mpg role where he's mostly out there to defend.

Are we talking about the same Jackson that refused to workout for the C's before the draft and was actually considered the third best player in the draft after Fultz and Ball?  If I remember correctly, he was slated by the experts to go third with Tatum fourth.

Now he is trying to stick in the NBA.  He seems to have some talent, but I am not sure why he seems to have fallen off a cliff, struggling to stay with Detroit.

They have three roster spots left. My guess is they use at least, if not two of those on Davison, Mader and Begarin for luxury tax savings (2nd round picks are cheaper than vet minimums, so lower luxury tax cost, saves almost a million dollars).

That leaves maybe only one more vet min spot.

I think we'll see a 5 signed at the vet min. Then, I think we'll see either Davison or Begarin signed as a developmental spot. Finally, I think we'll leave our 15th roster spot open for now (in terms of guaranteed money).

1 - Smart
2 - Brown
3 - Tatum
4 - Horford
5 - Rob
6 - Brogdon
7 - White
8 - Gallo
9 - Grant
10 - Vet Minimum 5 (Thomas Bryant, Dwight Howard, LaMarcus Aldridge in that order for me).
11 - Pritchard
12 - Hauser
13 - Kornet
14 - Davison or Begarin
15 - Left Open for a buyout candidate or trade flexibility in season

That would be my bet.

Davinson and Begarin will probably be on those two 2way contracts.

Bryant just signed with the Lakers.

I think Whiteside would be a really solid defensive fit for the Celtics.  Maybe 500 rebounds and 100 blocks for a backup 5 are 'empty calories' in your book, but they would certainly shore up the 5 spot behind Rob Williams, who we all know can't stay healthy a full 82 games.

I don't really see any better defensive options in free agency.  And goodness knows I don't want to see Kornet get any serious run of minutes!!!

My guess is similar to yours, except that I think they’ll have Davison and Begarin both take spots 14 and 15.  Kornet is supposedly not fully guaranteed, so I don’t think he’ll make it past early January before he’s cut or traded, clearing up roster spot 15 as you’ve described.

The two-ways will be Brodric Thomas and one of Trevion Williams, Kabengele, and Matt Ryan.

Why waste a spot on Davison?

I’m a fan of his, so I don’t think it’s a waste, personally, but financially speaking it saves the team $3-4 million in luxury tax relative to filling it with someone else making the minimum.  I don’t think there’s anyone out there worth paying an extra $4 million for to be the 13th or 14th man on the roster.

I think he’s too raw.  I would rather wait to start the clock running on him.

Where did you read that Kornet is nonguaranteed?  That signing is still puzzling to me. I mean, why give him a two-year deal? That means he’s not subject to a subsidized vet minimum, meaning we pay more in luxury tax, correct?

As for Davison, a 2-way deal still counts as service time for minimum contracts and the like, so the clock starts regardless.

It sounds like he, Thomas, and maybe one or two others will be on contracts that can be converted to 2-ways/on 2-ways with a chance to convert to a full deal, so ultimately the summer and training camp will really answer this question, but if it's close between him and Thomas, I expect Davison to get the nod.

Can you explain the allure of Thomas? He's a 25 year old 2 guard that is trying to convert to point. I actually root for the guy, but what is there?

I was literally about to post this exact same thing. I don’t see any NBA potential at all.  He hasn’t showed much in three limited NBA stops.  What’s the attraction?

Worth the punt.
