Phoenix Suns star Devin Booker has agreed on a four-year, $224M super max extension, his agents Jessica Holtz and Melvin Booker of @CAA_Basketball tell ESPN. Deal begins in 2024-2025 and brings Booker’s total contract value to six years and $295M.

I genuinely think if you don't like Beal's contract, you also shouldn't like Booker's. I put Lavine, Beal, and Book roughly as the same tier of player. I realize many would disagree with me on this, but I just don't think Booker is that guy any more than Beal, or Towns, etc.

In the NBA today, the max contracts aren’t just reserved for the “best of the best”.  I feel like even fringe all stars get that.  However, a couple differences between Booker and Beal are that Booker should be in his prime through the life of the extension and the Suns are contenders.  Beal is being paid $50 mil/yr to play for a middling team

Oh it is a lot, but Booker is younger, healthier, and frankly just better than Beal.  He has also been on, record wise, the best team in the sport the last 2 seasons, one of which, they were 2 wins away from a championship.

I've long felt that the fact that there is a max contract creates situations like this where teams are forced to give a max contract to lesser players.  And if there wasn't a max contract, guys like Giannis or Lebron in his prime, would have these GIGANTIC deals (in today's dollars like 70 million a year or more), but guys like Beal wouldn't get the 50 million a year contract.  The max creates this expectation that wouldn't otherwise exist for the star, but not superstar player.

I still can't come to terms with paying Beal over 50 million a year.  That is just insane for a player of Beal's caliber.

Jokic I totally understand, but Beal is just nuts.

It could be one of the worst contracts in the league before the ink dried

Wizards have now owned 4 of the worst contracts of all time:

John Wall
Gilbert Arenas
Russell Westbrook
Bradley Beal

I remember Blatche getting a ridiculous contract too but not quite on that level

They lost high draft pick Otto Porter (was he a #3?) because they refused to give him a max deal.

But yeah, they're always stuck with middling to crappy teams and trying to sell tickets by overpaying a "star."

financial viability aside, of those names I suspect we'll get Gallinari and would like to add Brown at a minimum.  if we can get Smith and/or Holliday, that would be a really solid offseason.  pie in the sky wishing.

Thought GSW would keep him. Love that for him and I like his fit in Portland.

Nice. He gets paid and this makes the Warriors worse. Hopefully they don’t want to pay Porter Jr either.

I have far less concerns about that contract then pretty much every other max contract signed this summer (aside from Jokic).  Zion obviously has health concerns, but his talent and impact to winning are also unquestioned.  Those are both clearly max contract worthy.  The only issue is the injuries, and that is a big issue, but teams rarely discount contracts for injuries.

Suddenly two years and $13M or so for Gallo doesn't seem so bad...

I thought similar but for Jalen Smith. Give Smith all 4 years. He could be next Bobby Portis and be a huge help.

Also players don’t hesitate to max contract because they have ability to force trade to their preferred destination before the ink has dried. I expect Zion to make a trade demand within two years if Pels are unable to compete for championship.

Yahoo Sources: Ricky Rubio and Cleveland come to terms on a three-year, $18.4 deal.

That seems like a good value contract.
