If you can put Beal, Brown, and Tatum together you have to go for it. Just trading Brown for Beal is a sidewards step.
It's probably a backwards step. Beal had his best scoring years taking 23 shots a game. Give Jaylen 23 shots a game and he's most likely averaging well over 30 PPG. And Jaylen's defense is so much better than Beal's.

Point taken. Either way, you add to Brown and Tatum you don't swap one of them.

Absolutely.

Also, if I am moving Smart and White, I want Beal and Hachimura. Then use the TMLE and the TPE to fill out the backcourt bench pieces.

Agreed. Then you have a top end starting five of Beal, Brown, Tatum, Hachimura and TIMELORD! I'm in on that.

As I posted elsewhere I think this trade makes some level of sense for both teams

Smart, White, Nesmith, 23 1st, 25 1st (top 4)

for

Beal, Smith

so post-trade contracts

PG - Beal, Pritchard, Smith
SG - Brown
SF - Tatum, Hauser, Stauskas
PF - Horford, Grant, Morgan, Fitts
C - Rob, Theis

That leaves 2 open roster spots with all the TPE's and the TMLE though not much draft capital.  Team clearly could use a wing or two, but I think there may be some targets out there with the TPE's that might serve more as salary dumps for the team trading i.e. guys like Duncan Robinson or Maxi Kleber.

Yeah, that’s a pretty bad return for Washington. White and Smart are repetitive, both combo guards that are very good defensively, but can’t shoot. Nesmith is worthless at this point and the picks most likely aren’t going to be very good for the next 3+ years. Jrue holiday netted New Orleans: Steven Adams, Eric Bledsoe, two future first round picks, right to swap two additional first round picks. Beal is a better player, The Wizards would never accept that offer.
You are not thinking about it right. The Wizards have zero leverage. If Beal wants to go to Boston he tells them they have two options 1) he’ll opt in to his contacts but only if they trade him to Boston or 2) he’ll opt out of his contract and they’ll get nothing.

So the trade simply has to be better than nothing. Smart is reigning DPOY and we just gave up a first and a pick swap for White. So they both have value. It might take a third team to make it all work, but if Beal wants to come to Boston and the Cs want him, a deal can absolutely get done.

Basically the same way Anthony Davis worked his way onto the Lakers.  The Lakers or he walked.

New Orleans received: Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart, and multiple unprotected first-round picks and swaps. Not bad for a team with “Zero leverage”.

Totally agree. The Lakers were bidding against themselves and they got fleeced.

Hopefully the Celtics, if the same scenario happened with Beal, would be more discerning.

Beal is also 29 And has maybe four more All-Star-level seasons left in him?

Well, it's really all very simple. If we can't find a way to fit Beal in under the salary cap and the two want to play together, there's only one solution: We need to trade Tatum to Washington.

Fleeced?  The Lakers won a NBA championship in large part because of Davis and the Pelicans have been 12, 10, and 10 games under .500 in the 3 seasons without Davis and 2 of those seasons they had Zion for at least some of the year.  They no longer have Ball and the crap they traded the 4th pick for hasn't panned out.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

beal still can't and won't play defense. to get beal, the celtics would probably have to unload horford, who is a good defensive player. boston's highly touted switch-defense would be greatly diminished. beal would hands down the worst defender in boston's top 7 man rotation, it would not even be close.

next, beal is too similar to kemba walker for me to think he would work here. yes, beal is (was?) better and still is younger than walker, but he also still a volume scorer with poor defense and has questions about his health.

last year his 3 point shooting declined to 30%. Maybe that is simply a down year...maybe. but in the 3 years prior he shot 3 pointers in the 35% range, which is a little bit above league average.

also, he is due to be paid around $36,000,00 per year.

i think beal is a great offensive guard, but i don't think he would fit well with what makes the celtics a potential winner next year.

I am not in love with Beal and do not particularly care for his game. However, I am in love with keeping Tatum happy, so if getting Beal and keeping him long-term is what is needed to keep Tatum here long-term, so be it. Make it happen, Brad. Even if it means moving JB, which would possibly be a downgrade on the court in the short-run (but worth it if it guarantees Tatum plays here another 8-12 years).

Only way of seeing it happen is if Beal ask Washington to trade him to the Celtics in exchange for opting in to his 36.4 option

I think we’re approaching the discussion a bit backward on our offering for a trade.

He said he wants to go to a team that can win. This clearly implies to me that he’s leaving the wizards as they were awful last year.

So to me he’s either going to do it the hard way (name one team) or be nice and give them 3-5 destinations (safe to say Boston is on this list).

If it’s the first one, we really just need to give them enough value to not be dicks about it and let him walk rather than get our assets.

If it’s the second one, we need to offer close to the other teams.

In any world, Horford doesn’t get it done for #2, but he may be able to be packaged with Nesmith/Williams + picks if Beal takes a hard line. Horford is an expensive waste of cap for one year, but let’s be honest they’re not signing any big name free agents anytime soon (they’re not winning next year without Beal, ever) and those picks and other player are positive assets still.

If we’re in Option #2, you guys have covered it pretty well. We’ll have to give up at least 1 young major rotational player not named Jay*. If they can get him without giving up Smart, everyone else is expendable IMO.
