I know we just watched him get embarrassed at the FT line but it seems like every time we play the Nets he puts himself in good defensive position, gets timely offensive rebounds and blocks and he just turned 23.

To be clear: I'm not interested in giving anything up for Claxton. But if the Nets are looking at adding Ben Simmons to the lineup and are worried about him being a non-shooter they may not have much use for Claxton (another non-shooter) anymore while also thinking about an insane luxury tax bill. If they want to dump players for nothing to save money, Claxton might be one of them.

If that were the case, would the Celtics make for a good dumping ground? He has good size and length and he's young. He can take the Luke Kornet place on the roster but actually be usable in certain situations.

Claxton is a restricted free agent with a cheap QO ($2.2 million, so barely above the minimum).  I think there’s a number out there that the Nets wouldn’t match, but that number is probably higher than we can offer given we only have the taxpayer MLE.  I don’t think there’s a chance he doesn’t get his qualifying offer.  And we wouldn’t be able to sign-and-trade for him due to the hard cap.

I do like Claxton but I can’t see him even wanting to play in Boston simply because of Robert Williams.

They are such similar players stylistically that Claxton wouldn’t get the needed playing time to develop. Teams like the Hornets, Trail Blazers and even the Bulls would interest Claxton much more than us unfortunately.

There is also the possibility that Ben Simmons is moved on from Brooklyn this off-season for multiple pieces and if that’s the case Claxton most likely re-signs with the Nets anyway.

Oh, I didn't realize he was a free agent, I thought he had another year.

Well, I'm still interested in him taking up that Luke Kornet roster spot.
