Milwaukee was always the team that I thought would be the toughest to beat in the East. If we beat them I feel that either Philly or Miami will be easier. Milwaukee match up against us really well, they have a two (actually three) big lineup with Giannis, Lopez and Portis, they have four guys in their rotation shooting 40% from 3 in Holiday, Allen, Connaughton, Portis and another 3 shooting 35% in Middleton (our killer), Lopez and Ibaka. And 3 of those are bigs. They have a lot of length and rim protectors so defensively they will be much better than Brooklyn. Middleton out is a big loss for them but they're still a solid team. And stopping Giannis has its own set of challenges different to stopping KD, because of the physicality that he presents, and Giannis will have shooters all around him.
I expected the Nets series to be done in 5 games but this one I wouldn't be surprised if it goes the distance, unless we can steal one on their floor. This is where getting 2nd vs 3rd seed against them could make the difference. They're certainly not unbeatable, as Chicago have proven, but we need to treat this one with respect. Sure we swept the Nets but it was a very close sweep. Game 1 we needed a buzzer beater, Game 2 we had to come back from 15+ down, Game 3 we needed a 39 burger from Tatum for a 6 point win and Game 4 we closed it to 1 in the final couple of minutes. So it's not like we thrashed them.
I hope that the closeness of the contest, against a flawed Nets side where the stars underperformed, will give the team food for thought as they prepare for this team. Milwaukee are much more together as a team than Brooklyn were, even without Middleton they have a strong team ethic and they're the defending champs.
We need to approach whoever we play against with confidence but humility, and maintain the composure we had in this series, where we didn't panic whenever the Nets went on a run. I have faith in the team to develop and stick to a game plan to nullify Giannis and take away Milwaukee's shooters, and I have confidence in JT and JB to lead our offense. If we can maintain our mental approach we should be in good stead against whoever we have to play.
