First I've heard of this.

A somewhat surprising name the #Celtics are reportedly discussing in trade talks ahead of deadline? Grant Williams https://t.co/4Xfd10BY68

I wouldn't quite say he's on the trading block:

Quote
Jackie MacMullan indicates on the latest edition of the Bill Simmons Podcast that a top young reserve for Boston could be on the market as well in Grant Williams.

“The one thing I’ve heard that I don’t like is the possibility of (the Celtics) moving Grant Williams,” MacMullan said. “I think Grant Williams has had a really good year. He’s four inches too short but he’s the only guy who is hitting 3s for you. You better get a shooter back if you are going to trade Grant Williams.”

Without sourcing, it's hard to tell what that means, but my guess is that some teams have asked about Williams, and the Celts haven't told them he's untouchable.

Grant may very well be the best asset the Celtics have, so it would make sense that his name came up
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

  • Team XYZ calls Brad back after he's left them 3 messages.
  • Brad asks for a starting caliber player, offering something like Schroder and Langford.
  • Team XYZ responds by asking for Timelord.
  • Brad says no.
  • Then Team XYZ asks for Grant.
  • Brad says 'maybe', but asks for another asset back.
  • Team XYZ hems and haws, they agree they'll call each other back

Deals like this are unlikely to occur, but the Cs pretty much have to talk about Grant in deals if they're hoping to upgrade the roster.

He is a moderate talent. The Celtics should not be treating him as some core piece. They should be open to moving to him. They should be open to / looking to move him in an effort to upgrade the team.

Grant worked his tail off this summer to save his career.    He is smart and can shoot but sometimes his size is a problem but not as much with the more fit version of himself.   You can bet teams are going to ask about him.

I think teams are asking more than us putting him out there. But he definitely is not on the can't trade list.

I think reporters make up stuff more than we imagine.  It generates headlines, articles and clicks and they can always hide behind an anonymous source.    Not saying that Jackie or Brian Robb do it, but it does happens.   Some websites like NBA Analysis generate 90% of their traffic from this kind of crap.

I suspect that literally everyone on the C's other than Brown and Tatum are available, so this is not really a surprise.

Of course the Celtics would trade grant Williams for the right price.

The only way Grant should be moved is in a deal for an upgrade.  This team is clicking.  I wish they would just move Dennis and add a piece and pay the [dang] tax.

Adding players like PJ Washington and Dante DiVincenzo could really help the Bench.  Keep up the D and both could spot start.  These are the types of moves I wish they would make.  Add not subtract.  PJ can replace Al next year.

Depends on what the trade is. I bet we'd trade anyone if the right players were coming back. Not really news.

I’m sort of whatever on Grant. He can hit the 3 now but still doesn’t really have a position. If you can get some good back I’d have no issues with him off the roster.

PJ for Grant?  PJ is a bit longer the Grant and is signed through next year as well.

If it is to be included in a larger deal for a real upgrade, a starter at the 4, yes of course (combining him with picks, Horford, Richardson and so on). But only if a real upgrade is available (ideally Sabonis, evantually Jerami, Barnes or Woods). And it is unprobable until this summer I guess (unfort because I really would love this 5, I think Smart with Timelord and Sabonis on paint would be enough of a PM).

If it is to take a vet on the downhill or draft materials, no thanks ! He is the only picks that has hit lately with the other Williams. He is one of the only 3 point specialist on the team. He is smart, a well made head a hard worker... And at a post of need...

I think we may just find a place for Kanter, Dozier, Bol and maybe PP or Nesmith if we wabt a vet player + clean salaries to go under the tax. Keep the 8 men rotation for PO's

He'd be more difficult for us to trade than a guy like Schroder, I'd imagine.

We have Pritchard waiting behind Schroder... a lesser player, but still potentially a viable backup guard.  So we can more or less just shop Schroder for best offer.  But in Grant's case, the guy behind him is Fernando, who appears to be roster filler.

If we have moves lined up to bring in a rotation-caliber PF and also address our shooting, then sure, Grant's available.

Grant nowhere near the best asset, he's just may be the best asset fans are willing to trade.  The key is that any players that's good or really good is untradeable.
