As I see Ayton vs Gobert

Defense

Interior help defense - Gobert
PnR drop coverage - Gobert
PnR high coverages - Ayton
Switching - Ayton
Transition D - Ayton
Post defense - unsure, maybe Ayton
Defending face up bigs & stretch bigs - Ayton

Gobert has some trouble with muscular post players in a way that Ayton does not but Gobert also has superior shot contesting in the post against everyone else.

Offense

Midrange shooting - Ayton
Post scoring - Ayton
Interior finishing - even
Passing - Gobert
Transition scoring - Ayton

Rebounding - comparable

Conclusion

So is Gobert's advantages in terms of shot-blocking / defense below 15 feet enough to out-do Ayton's multiple advantages elsewhere.

I'm not convinced it is.

With the 11th pick of the 4th round, the Milwaukee Bucks select Deandre Ayton.

DeAndre Ayton is the guy I was wondering about relative to Gobert in the last round.

Who is the better player?

I wanted to ask and see what people's opinions were.
Gobert is superior for me. Gobert's impact on defence is transformative. His defensive advantages far outweigh the slight perimeter defensive advantages I give to Ayton. And his rebounding is significantly better.

While Ayton has advantages, none are as significant as Gobert's monstrous defensive impact

Call me crazy but I think Gobert is probably superior in everything on defence - maybe they're around equal in high PnR, transition and on switches (still think that Gobert is probably superior there, again his mobility is vastly underrated), but I do think that you're giving way too much credit to Ayton when Giannis (powerful guy but not Embiid) dropped 40 and 50 bombs on him with ease: Ayton simply couldn't guard the Greek god whenever the latter got into the paint because he was overwhelmed in speed, strength and defensive rotations. Gobert does have some issues with power inside, but he never gets killed the way Ayton did in the finals.

Really good video on Gobert's defence:

Imo, Gobert is clearly better. What might tip the balance in favour of Ayton going forward is his shooting potential. I mean, he's a career 75.6% FT shooter on 2.5 attempts per game, which is nothing to sneeze at for a 6'11'' Center with a 7' 5.5” wingspan. FT% is usually indicative of shooting potential. Wouldn't be surprised if he develops a 3pt shot next season. In comparison, Gobert's career average from the FT line is 63%.

Yeah, I think both guys went a few picks lower than they could have, but were generally drafted in the right area based upon what they've shown to date.  You've got to like that Ayton was a defensive anchor on a Finals team at so young of an age.  Sure, he struggled with Giannis, but nobody is going to slow down Giannis when he's in beast mode.

Hmmm ... I wonder if CJ McCollum was the right pick or not. There are some fun combinations of forwards that I could have put next to Luka and LaVine that I did not see yesterday. Guys I dismissed too early in the process for various reasons.

Those could have been interesting lineups.

I'll mention them later on after they get picked.

I might have gotten too pigeon holed on the idea of getting a 3rd scorer in order to compete with some of these other offensive powerhouses in this 12 team league ... instead of choosing a type of team with two big scorers and three 14-15ppg type guys next to them.

edit: eh, nevermind. I think I've fallen in love with an idea at the #3 slot but still open to offers if anyone has a top target.

Side question:   do we want to run a tight time two rounds on Labor Day?

I was thinking we just skip Labor Day, in case folks are busy. 2 rounds a day Tuesday-Friday gives every team 13 players

You also have those days starting at 5:30 rather than 6.

I'm happy to start at 6, just threw it up at 5:30 to keep the times somewhat similar - could reduce the times to 5 minute per slot in the 2nd round, if we want to keep it moving. We can figure it out over the weekend :)

We've been moving pretty quickly so I think we have cover to shorten times.
