Some Laker fans are dreaming of a s&t with Smart and Schroder. Crazy.
Let them dream all they want. If we land him via a sign and trade, we have to sign him for 3 or 4 years. According to rumors, Schroder wants to rehabilitate his value with a view to hitting free agency once again in 2022.

I guess it would have to be for a portion of the MLE. I mean, didn't we offer Kanter a portion of the MLE as well? Don't think we have our full MLE availlable anymore.

I think Kanter is on a vet min.

Jared Weiss: ''Celtics and Enes Kanter are working out a deal for likely a portion of the MLE, league sources tell The Athletic. Salary still being figured out as team settles its cap situation''.

Not sure whether this is accurate or not, but The Athletic is a reputable source.

That’s be weird considering how little difference there is between the vet min and even half the taxpayer MLE.
Kanter's vet min would be $2,641,691 (although the cap hit would be $1,669,178). The taxpayer MLE starts at $5,890,000.

Not sure what's going on either. Nothing has been formalized yet.

Hear that the three-team trade (Bos.-ATL-Sac) will be announced soon, unchanged. ... Celtics await a response from Smart agent Jason Glushon, but are said to be willing to extend him for roughly $17M over four years.

Lots to digest...!!

This is exactly my understand.  I saw an update to the original report but I can't find it now.  Using the Vet Min is good as it allows us to keep the full MLE available and we also get about $1M credit against the cap/tax.

Fair enough. If so, we still have our full TPE then.

Just to pick out one line on the Markkanen discussion that I wanted to expand out on.

A Porzingis type of player, given a new team and being inspired by Tatum and Brown.
I see Markkanen as very similar to Porzingis as well. Both guys are players who I feel are better off long term as centers than at the forward position.

The forward spot has gotten too small, quick and athletic for these guys. In today's offenses, the height advantage / post up threats are not effective enough in exploiting things in their (Markkanen / Porzingis) direction. Instead, they are being defended by guys who are much better at defending the perimeter than old school PFs used to be. Similar to Dirk Nowitzki when coaches used to defend him with wings (like Bruce Bowen) before Dirk developed his post game. Only nowadays, nobody wants these guys in the post. At least not very often. Limiting the advantage of their height.

Both guys have the size to play center defensively but are lacking in know-how - particularly Markkanen. It would take a year long commitment and proper coaching to get them up to an adequate level. Porzingis I reckon can be an above average defensive center because of his superior size & shot-blocking but Markkanen has lesser physical tools. He could surprise us all and commit to becoming a strong defensive (his speed, agility & switch-ability are impressive for a center) but this is unlikely. Most likely outcome is just getting to being adequate - to a point where his defense doesn't kill you and his offense is a major boost to your team making him a large net positive for his team.

I also think both players need to be developed as passers. They are both too shot-happy. They are such scoring threats that every time they are near the ball (not even on the ball, just near it), the defenses goes on alert. Improving their passing would allow them to get more touches which would allow them to be more involved in the game. To put the opposition defense on alert more often. Both guys need to learn from PF/Cs like Al Horford in how to facilitate an offense. It will open up their scoring and create a whole new world of offensive opportunities for them.

I don't disagree with any of this.  Both Porzingis and Markkanen are kind of hybrids.  Our short term need is for a big that can shoot (Danny's words).  I am not hung up on the difference between C and PF.  There is some difference but I just want to be able to put 2 bigs on the floor when we need to, where at least one of them can be an offensive weapon.  Right now we have Horford and Williams (assuming Thompson is traded).  Maybe Markkanen covers the opposing C and Williams the opposing faster big or swing.

The intent isn't to always play with a conventional 2 big line with exactly a PF and exactly a C.  If we had Markkanen (or Porzingis) there would be line ups where he was the only big, line ups with Horford, line ups with Williams, line ups with Parker.  It's all OK.

So long as Markkanen continues to shoot as he has his entire career, defends either position reasonable well, isn't a black hole on offense, doesn't he fit exactly the mold of exactly what we need?  If there is a chance to be opportunistic and grab him on a reasonable deal, I am all for it.  It may not work out.  There are no guarantees.  But this is the type of player I am the most willing to take a chance on (way more than Dennis Schroder for example).

Oh yeah, I am all in on getting Markkanen.

But I am not a fan of two big man lineups and I do not believe they suit Markkanen / are capable of getting the best out of him.

I love his game. He has a lot of talent. I'm happy to take a risk on him. A big risk even ... I consider Markkanen a max contract level player but only as a center in a one big man lineup.

As a PF in a two big lineup, I see Markkanen as a fairly average player who is only worth average player money (what the Spurs were offering) ... and I prefer playing small with Tatum at PF alongside an extra guard over this. I prefer having that extra ball-handler out there who can create something for himself and others.

I also believe Markkanen will end up unhappy in Boston as a PF for the same reasons he is currently unhappy in Chicago. It does not allow him to showcase his talent.

That is pretty specific information.  Who would leak the exact value of a contract offer like that?

It brings them back to being just plain cheap, with no path to contention.

Yeah I'm starting to come around to your perspective here, despite not being as pro-Fournier as you were.

That is fine but it is not great if it is the only way you can play.  It is a huge advantage if you have at least one big who has enough skill to play alongside another big without leaving the team with too little shot making or play making.

Right now, we have no big with any skill.  It is so bad that Horford is actually an improvement for us.  It sounds like we agree that Markkanen has at least the potential to be that skilled big.  If we get him, I am sure that the coaches will figure out how to play him, what line ups work best.  Maybe 10 min with Parker, 10 min with Williams, and 10 min as the one big.  Give him a chance to find his ideal slot.  Close the game with which ever line up proves the best.

Anyway, if we end up trading Thompson for Dunn and Fernando, I think this is all pretty much off the table anyway.  We will have to do it with Horford  our "skill big" and Parker as our swing big.

Unless we send Smart out, with his new extension, for a big and sign Schroder, which seems very unlikely.
