Fournier is not coming back based off the latest and greatest. Just awful.

https://twitter.com/murf56/status/1421538433042898946?s=21
Question is, what can we get for him? We sacrificed a huge chunk of the TPE for Fournier, plus 2 second-round picks (if not 4, cause we sent Charlotte 2 picks as well). It would suck big time if we just let him walk.

Already posted above that my targets would be Joe Ingles, Robert Covington and Thad Young. DWC mentioned Kyle Anderson. We could also ask for Tyus Jones to make the salaries work. According to rumors, the Grizzlies have made him available in trade talks. Both Anderson and Jones are expirings. The C's could then go after a max free agent in 2022.

Obviously, Fournier would have to be on board with this.

1) If he walks, he walks. This is always the risk with trading for a player on an expiring contract like Fournier.
2) You list a bunch of Grizzlies players, but from what I've read it is the Knicks who are pursuing Fournier. The Knicks can just sign him without getting involved in a S&T.
Celtics fan for life.

It's not correct to say 4 second round picks anymore, since balance of Hayward trade exception was used to get Richardson, so in fairness should allocate the cost of the Hayward TPE to the two trades.

So the Fournier rental cost us 3 2nd round picks. Right?? (we may have to  give up a highly protected 2nd round pick for Richardson, but the protections make it essentially worthless IMSMC.

I know mate. At the end of the day, it's possible that he'll sign for whichever team makes him the better offer. Assuming we won't re-sign him, imo Brad should be on the phone trying to find potential suitors for him via a sign and trade. Not sure whether the owners are willing to pay the necessary tax though.

Well I guess a 2-3 month rental for 3 second-round picks was worth it lol. Those 3 second-round picks would become multiple Semi Ojeleyes or Abdel Naders anyway who will just warm the bench or not even crack in the regular rotations lol

Or they'd become Nikola Jokic, Manu Ginobili and Draymond Green. :P

@footey
Yep, you are right. This is why I put it in parentheses.

Yep.  Funny how Boston and NY are both in active negotiations despite the anti-tampering period.
$20 mil a year is a lot but wouldn't the C's still have to do that deal rather than let him walk for nothing?

Not necessarily. Part of what the Cs have been doing with all these moves is get rid of players who are too expensive and create financial flexibility going forward (Dunn and Richardson have expiring contracts).
Flexibilty is great but the team is worse this year.

At this point, we should just trade Smart for a matching expiring contract and a future 1st. If we are going to let him go anyway, it would be nice to add a future pick. It’s not like we are trying to climb the standings next season.

Fwiw, it seems like the Heat are interested in Smart.

Don't think it's a foregone conclusion that we'll have a worse team next season. I'm holding out hope that we can get a decent starter for Fournier via a sign and trade. I also like the JRich trade a lot!

If that's true it's just another wasted years off Brown and Tatum's prime.  :'(

According to a league source, negotiations between the Celtics and Evan Fournier are close to stalling, with the team unwilling to meet the valuable wing player’s asking price of $80 million over four years.  https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bostonherald.com/2021/07/31/0731-bh-s-fournier/amp/

When the C’s traded for Fournier, wasn’t it understood that he was going to command between 15-$20M/year? He’s 28, so a 4 year deal would ensure that you get him through his prime. It’s going to really suck if he goes to the Knicks For 4/$80M...

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

Brown and Tatum are still 2 years or so from entering their prime, at a minimum.

Heck, it can be argued that Giannis Antetokounmpo still hasn't reached his prime at 26 years old. Most consider NBA stars in their prime between the ages of 27 and 32.

If we pay him he will resign with us. We aren't willing to offer him that much and lose our flexibility to sign a max guy next summer though.

If the Celtics want Fournier there's nothing stopping them from signing him. Nobody can offer him more.

I was uninspired by Fornier in his time with the C’s and am fine with them letting him go in favor of max cap space next off-season.

I think building a strong defense-oriented team around the Jays in 2021-22, they can exceed expectations and be a top landing spot for FAs in a year.   Ime will add to the team’s  attractiveness.

I agree. Fournier is nice, but not worth 20 million a year and losing our ability to go after a max guy next summer. I also much prefer the defensive focus that Stevens is putting together.
