Welcome back Al !   :)

I like his quiet serious demeanor, but smiles too.

I think he would make an excellent BiGS assistant coach .

Not sure at 35 if Al can start... or start for most of the season

Either come off the bench or start (but also load manage)

It will be up to Udoka to figure it out

The bad thing is... Horford vs Thompson vs TL/ Brown are different style bigs.   Udoka will need several different setups/players adjust on the fly

While I prefer Rob starting, I don't think Al's age is the issue.  He seems in great shape, based on last season, and all the rest he's gotten. He's taken good care of himself.  Lebron is 2 years older, and look at how well he still plays. No one is benching him.

Lebron is a freak, so I wouldn’t really use him as an example. Players like CP3 and Tucker are also still going strong at 36.

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

Also, sounds like he would prefer playing the 4. Smart, Brown, Tatum, Horford, Timelord starting lineup sounds pretty good...

I don't like it. Not enough dribble penetration from the perimeter. Too much playing with the ball in front of a set defense. Not forcing them out of position.

Horford is a far lesser offensive player at PF than C. He is maybe an average offensive player for a forward. He is well above average for a center. Few centers offer his outside shooting & passing ability whereas many forwards offer similar to superior outside shooting, superior scoring variety, superior driving capabilities but not as much passing. The PF position nowadays is fitted with SFs and PF/SFs. Guys like Horford who are C/PF are dinosaurs in these lands.

Horford and Timelord together squeezes the court. Timelord is no scoring threat outside of the paint. Horford is easier defended by quicker mobile forwards than slow footed bigs who want to cheat back into the paint. That puts a lot of pressure on the three perimeter players to create off the dribble.

Too much pressure for a team without a dynamic player whether it is a PG like Trae Young or CP3 or a playmaking wing like LeBron or Doncic.

Smart in particular will be one to suffer in this environment. More forced jump-shots late in shot clock off the dribble with a hand in his face.

We need a better offensive PG to make that lineup work.

Horford has always indicated that he wants to be a 4 but in the NBA that's never been his ideal role.

With the Celtics dearth of available jersey numbers, started wondering if Al was going to have to reclaim his jersey from one of the younger guys.  But kind of surprised nobody has worn #42 here since Al left.

Like Aaron Nesmith really came in and decided #26 was the better number to wear?  Dude wore 24 in high school and college (retired with the Celtics for Sam Jones), my first thought would be you flip it and take #42, but apparently he went up to the next closest available number instead (just a guess, no idea why he actually settled on #26).

I have to agree and not that its a big deal but hate ''weird'' numbers . Hard to believe 42 hadnt been worn and retired before Al had it the first time and by far the best 2 digit number left. 26 isnt as bad as Smart wanted 36?

Find it somewhat grating hearing him talk about how much he loved Boston and how glad he is to be back when he left us for Philly, of all teams.

Did you hear Anna, his sister, about Philly fans, in that lightning round of questions, at CLNS an hour or so ago?

Wow I hate the sentence I just typed. Coffee needs to start kicking in.

I'ma quickly find her answer for ya. It made me giggle. 2 secs.

Haha, unsurprising. Celtics fans can be tough, but Philly fans are just bitter

She's been hating on Philly for some time now, even when they left she still had good things to say about Boston... constantly all the time... she kept her ties with Boston, I recall her mentioning how she wanted Al to get back to being a Celtic. So at least on that regard it's all genuine.

When the city gets labeled as racist and what not, she's one of the first ones to defend us. So as far as I'm concerned, I'm good with whatever she has to say.

I mean, he got a $109M contract from Philly and the C’s reportedly were not coming close to that. Can’t really blame him for taking the money and it’s not like he pulled a Ray Allen on us.

Don't recall the specifics, but what I recall was that we were going to be left hanging once Irving left, so at that point it wasn't making much sense to retain Al Horford or some such, or at least pay him a big contract. But then Kemba happened, at that point I think the Celtics were reevaluating how they could keep Horford (probably meet his demands), but by that point Horford had already made his choice.

So in all, it just was bad timing.

Just don't really recall if we didn't have plans for Horford after Kyrie left, and things changed with Kemba or if the willingness of what we could pay Horford changed after Kemba decided to join us. But in the end, just things didn't work out.

Al may want to play the 4 but at this stage of his career, his best position is the 5.  in his younger days, he was definitely good enough to be a high caliber 4.

Al Horford hitting his days just like how KG became the 5 for the celtics towards the end of his tenure as a Celtics.
