Coach will be a diversity candidate ...Cs break the barrier again and hire Becky Hammon, I bet she gets a look, but I think the HC will be African American ...Kyrie made sure of that. Patrick Ewing is from Cambridge? I want Juwon Howard.

I was thinking more of Kara Lawson if they went way outside the box.

I first want to say, thank you Danny Ainge, for all the hard work you done over your tenure here. I hope you enjoy your retirement, because you deserve it.

Secondly, how good this move is depends entirely on getting this coaching hire right. If we go with someone that turns out to be awful, this whole move is a freaking disaster.

This explains why Stevens didn't take the Indiana college job.
True. He probably knew that if he ever wanted to stop coaching, he'd have this lined up.

I'm not sure if any one is talking about it, but could this be purely based on health.  He did have a heart attack a couple of years back, maybe he thinks it's time...

It honestly might be good to have an ex player coach this team. They clearly stopped listening to Brad. Maybe a guy who has been there before can get to them.

Yup

and I bet he is happy, he doesn't have to do post game interviews

I don't mind Brad as a behind the scenes Xs and Os  consultant as well

The next coach will have that luxury

But I want the next coach to not be a "soft" guy.

I don't know if Walter is qualified and looking for a head coaching gig

Maybe Scal?

This smacks of desperation.

The only way this all makes sense is if they're planning a total reconstruction of the team this off-season.

Tatum, Brown .... they'll probably still be here in 6 months.

Anybody else?  I wouldn't bet on it.

This smacks of desperation.

Letting the coach buy the groceries never works out well.

The downward slide continues.

Stevens isn't coaching any more, so I'm not quite sure what you're talking about.

Initially when I read the headline I thought it meant that Brad was assuming the president role while remaining coach.  I see now that he's actually moving into Ainge's job and going to hire a replacement.

Honestly I think that's probably even worse .... now we have a GM with no experience in that role and we'll have a new coach.

I don't care who they get as long as they can coach & motivate these guys to compete defensively most nights, develop younger players and have an environment here that's attractive to prospective free agents.

To me that limits the candidates quite a bit.

Love the speed of the announcement. Shows it has been in the works. It is also a royal FU to the nba playoffs.

Why?   He played who he had.

Small Ball Joke, I guess we will see if it was Danny or CBS who did the small ball.

Now just hold on a minute...Danny's retiring, I'm sure we'll get a head coach in a minute.

(WIKI)
A three-sport star in high school, he was named to All-America teams in football, basketball, and baseball. At Brigham Young University, he was named national basketball college player of the year and won the John R. Wooden Award for the most outstanding male college basketball player. While in college, Ainge also played parts of three seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays of Major League Baseball (MLB), mostly as a second baseman. He was then drafted into the NBA by the Celtics. Ainge played in the NBA for 14 seasons, playing for the Celtics, Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings, and Phoenix Suns, primarily as a shooting guard. He went on to coach the Suns for three seasons before joining management of the Celtics, with whom Ainge has three NBA championships to his credit (two as a player, one as a team executive). During his playing career he appeared in one all star game, and was the NBA Executive of the Year in 2008.

He is a scratch golfer. One of the city of Boston's most extraordinary athletes. He was trained and appointed by Red Auerbach one of the most successful sports executives in history.

December 9, 1988 - against the 76'ers - career high 45 points

Stevens has some shoes to fill.

Stevens is very deliberative.  I think there's a very good chance he has success in his next role.  He's also very likely to foster a collaborative environment, so his cap experts and scouts will be leaned on.

I worry about finding a new coach, but at the same time I bet he has a very good idea of what it takes to coach, and will likely conduct a thorough search.  I don't think anyone would turn us down for an interview -- the team was disappointing this year, but it isn't like the cupboard is bare, and the organization has a good track record for job stability recently.  Doesn't mean the job is not without its challenges, but they'll get their top choice.
