Being reported just now. Figured a new thread is in order now that it's a done deal...

Brad Stevens is moving into the front office on a full-time role, and Celtics are expected to start a search for a new head coach, sources tell ESPN. Celtics staff and coaches have been informed of the changes.

I feel like this was in the cards for some time. I'm guessing that's part of the reason why Brad turned down the Indiana deal honestly.

But I can't believe Brad would want to leave coaching, it seems he really enjoys it. I'm pretty nervous now. New coach + first time GM...

That makes sense. Woj is reporting Danny has been thinking about leaving for months and has been discussing succession plans.

Ok.   Not expecting that.

Who is Brad's top assistant?

Well, we will not know if this was a good move for a while.   Is the rest of the front office staying the same?

Wow!! Did not see this coming. At all!!

Funnily enough, those polls on this site got it right in some twisted genie way. CBS no longer the coach. Ainge no longer the GM

Anyway, I hope CBS is ready for the new position. I also hope he’s ready to build around Tatum (and Brown) and hopefully his current relationships with his players won’t “cloud his vision”.

Why?   He played who he had.

I am actually shocked at this.  Not that Ainge is leaving but the rest.  This is just insane.

I have no clue.   I would have rather Ainge and Stevens still working together.

At least Stevens is not trying to be the coach and gm.

Call OKC and offer Sam Presti the farm. Bring him back home.

Presti is very good, but doesn't he have the same question marks that Danny has had since 2009?  He's very good at accumulating assets, but seemed incapable of getting over the hump.  Plus, he should have a permanent black mark for trading Harden:

Quote
October 27, 2012: Traded by the Oklahoma City Thunder with Cole Aldrich, Daequan Cook and Lazar Hayward to the Houston Rockets for Jeremy Lamb, Kevin Martin, a 2013 1st round draft pick (Steven Adams was later selected), a 2013 2nd round draft pick (Álex Abrines was later selected) and a 2014 1st round draft pick (Mitch McGary was later selected).

Yes, but the Harden trade was pretty much demanded by ownership, who refused to be a tax team at the time and wouldn’t give Harden a max extension.

The Presti criticisms are not unfounded, but it’s really hard to get a team over the hump without three real stars.  It’s hard to draft 3, and Presti was forced to trade one.  Ainge got his 3, but one got hurt in game 1, and by the time the J’s became stars, another had aged and the third bolted, and then Kemba hasn’t been healthy either.

I do give Ujiri credit for investing in some players not seen as stars that actually had that potential (Lowry and Siakam most notably), so that he could make his move to get his biggest star in Kawhi, but even that only lasted a season, and they’ve had worse finishes than the Celtics in each of the last two seasons, and 4 of the last 5.  Not saying he’s not a great executive, and he’d probably be at the top of my list, but it’s so hard to build a title team if you aren’t some combination of incredibly lucky or playing with different resources.

Stevens has been described as worn down with coaching since The Bubble, and welcomed the chance to make the transition to the front office, sources tell ESPN. Stevens will help lead the search for his successor as head coach.

Any frontrunners for head coach? Billups?

Unreal.  I'm not sure that giving the keys to the kingdom to a guy who is experiencing burnout (and who is underqualified) is in the team's best interests.

I've got to think that this is being done mostly due to money.  The team extended Brad, who has a lot of guaranteed salary left.  So, he gets moved up to a position he's not qualified for.

Hopefully we don’t lose Zarren. This is a stop gap in Steven’s career. Once he turned down the IU job, I convinced myself he is holding out for Duke once coach K retires. Give it 2-3 years as GM and unless Brad has unbelievable success, he will be the next coach at Duke.

Terrible day for C's.

Kind of inclined to agree, but I'm excited to see our new head coach.
