I have brought this up in a few threads. Does Smart + #16 pick get the Celtics into the range to draft Scottie Barnes? Dangerous trade giving up one of the Cs 5 best players and a near lotto pick for a 19year old with a questionable shot but he could be perfect next to Tatum and Brown.

Trading Smart isn't a necessity... The money we pay him for his production this year is a little too much, but last years and all years before it was a big + when you compare to his salary. When we were full of talent 2 years ago, we didn't have the same problem of him overplaying, overshooting.... He will always be a quiet low IQ offensive player but surrounded by elite talent, it won't be that much a problem when he will bring his elite qualities, that a contender team needs.

I mean maybe this bad year will help us to negociate his contract a little less than what he has now... And for, saying a 55M 4Y contract he could be very valuable, not saying that he is very playable in PO and crunch time, if we have other talent to take the ball and shoot.

The real question is more if we want to pay Smart or Fournier. Cause we have to give money on PF, to replace Ttum at 3, Brown at 2; mayve also a correct big or a PG to replace Kemab...  The obvious answer would be Fournier right now... He looks moore reliable as a 6th men and on what we see last games of cpurse... But he is on a contract year, is older than Smart, and may be overpayed. So, as a Smart believer, if his market become mor down I would more invest on him, but he has to accept a friendly contract this summer. Then try to get a sign and trade fo Fournier, with it sign for Collins, Barnes or somone like hat...

Personnaly even if he is very good last games, I want more to change at the PG and if possible find someone better than Thompson (he realy disapoint me, I was sure he would be OK and more constant).

If Smart and Picks could have gotten us somebody like Vucevic I think Ainge should just retire.

Smart has been a problem for some time now.

Even if a move like this were possible, getting younger is not going to fix what's wrong with this team.

Salary reduction is important.

A better pick would be great. Would Orlando take Smart and our pick so we could take Scottie Barnes? Defense, passing and athleticism at power forward?

Yes, please.

No more questionable young guys. If this season has shown us anything, this team needs more proven talent and veteran leadership. I'm totally fine with trading Smart, but I want a player that's going to actually help this team from day 1.

I agree, but moving Smart and a pick for Barnes does more than just get us Barnes. It clears salary and playing time for other guys to work out. We have Fournier, Nesmith and Langford, and we need those guys to work out. Smart is in the way.

The core of the team is young guys under contract. That's when you load up with young talent. Horford, Kyrie, Hayward are gone. Kemba probably will be too one way or another soon. Unless you're getting a true star, now is the time to acquire more young assets. No reason to reach for a second round or conference finals ceiling.

No reason to become a treadmill, lower seed that gets stuck in mediocrity. Because as long as Tatum and Brown are here, we're not going to be bad enough to bottom out and get high lottery picks. But if we're not giving them valid help, we're not going to be good enough to take the next step.

This team needs to add vets like Phoenix did by bringing in CP3 to pair with Booker and Ayton, or Philly did by bringing in Curry and Green to help stabilize the roster around Embiid and Simmons.

and who bring an edge of energy and focus consistently.  the young guys on our team -- even the best ones -- haven't figured that out yet.

I think when your top scorers / core guys are cool cucumbers / smiling warrior types like the Celtics have, that requires extra emphasis in the supporting cast to have guys who play with a lot of ferocity, edge, toughness etc.  I know those are nebulous intangibles that often get used as a substitute for real analysis, but i do think the team is missing that energy.  Marcus Smart can't provide it on his own.

Agreed...I'm so sick of this "Marcus is the heart and soul of our team" crap....Dude does just as many Bad things as Good things on the court...probably more Bad. Perkins is correct.

I agree that ideally the next big move the Cs make brings in a vet to partner with the Js and push the Cs to the top of the east. I just don't see that player becoming attainable. I am really high on Barnes and think the Cs could be the perfect team to unlock his full potential. I love the idea of having a 6'9 230lb forward with all nba defender potential player along side the Js. On offense his potential as a PG would allow the Cs to play more of a shooter then a pure point guard.

Except age is not the problem with the team, talent is.  Boston needs talent if it truly wants to compete for a title.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

Boston already is a treadmill team though.  The way to get out of that is to add a potential 3rd star and the only real way for Boston to do that is to trade assets to move up in the draft and hope that player hits.

Hard to disagree with what Perkins is saying.  On the court, his quick shots and turnovers can be deflating for the team and it is probably also true that the team is getting tired of listening to him (hard to know if this is true or not).

There are going to be off season changes, no doubt.  The most likely players to be sent out are Walker and Smart.  Of course it all comes down to what we get back in any trade.  I am not sure who would be available.  A legit starter level PF who can score is what we need but not sure we can get that for Smart.  Maybe.
