Smart has had a bad year this year. The rest of team was poor also.

My concern is how do you replace him? I can see Pops wanting him, but is his salary out of line?

He didn't help the young guys this year and he should have...that is not a good thing.

Contract year next year and I wouldn't be shocked if he plays well. He is an up and down player and we just had a down.
The contract year is literally why they need to trade him this summer. He’s going to go wild next year trying to prove himself for a bigger pay day. That usually means he’ll be a negative to the Cs based off the way he plays. Package him and Timelord together and see if you can snag someone like Clint Capella.
if Danny traded Smart and Timelord and only managed to acquire Capela he should be fired.  Smart alone should bring back a better player than that

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
He should have been moved last off season. At the very least at the deadline this year. Another blunder by DA. I said it with Hayward as well. He had a shot to move the guys on a high point, good luck getting value now. Might be stuck this last year.

Eh, we were good last year and were going for it. Also, Smart is under contract, so it's not like we are going to lose him for nothing. The blunder by Ainge was not dealing Kyrie mid-season after he literally said he was leaving to team up with AD, but I think everybody thought we were eventually going to flip the switch that season and maybe convince him to stay...that did not happen.

Anyway, I love Smart, but a change of scenery might be what's best for both parties. If the Cs are sure they can retain Fournier, he may be gone at draft time; if not, he will probably be gone the moment Fournier finishes signing the contract. We do need to get something good for Smart, though. None of this Kornet/Wagner crap we just got for Theis.

You drastically overrate Smart and Williams. Capella is a much better player than both of them.

you drastically overestimate Capella and underrate Smart and Timelord

Not sure how it is possible to underrate one of the worst offensive players in basketball (who is due for a contract) and an oft injured rotation center (who is due for a contract).

Annual DPOY candidate on a reasonable contract for another year and a young athletic center that has made the leap this year into not just a rotation player but an impactful rotation player.   Don't sell them short.  Danny won't.

not saying I wouldn't take Capella on the team but giving up both Smart and Timelord is an overpay

Subtracting Smart goes a long way towards solving for the Fournier salary problem, and the minutes crunch facing the development of Nesmith and Langford.

The team has a severe imbalance of depth at where Marcus plays, and a Kemba/Marcus backcourt is dismal. You can already see how much Fournier makes it easier for Walker to be effective on offense.

also solves a bit of the salary cap issue for next year.  move TT out as well and that will cut into the salary issues as well.

the value is fine, but I have no interest in JV on this team.  He isn't going to put Boston even in the next tier, he is older, doesn't stretch the floor, etc.  I just don't see the point in acquiring him.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

Can we move on from Perk as an analyst?

Anyway, I've said in the past that I think trading Smart will be an unfortunate necessity. He makes more sense on a contender that just needs him to be a defensive playmaker.  The Celts don't have that kind of infrastructure in place, and they're gonna need to cut salary. Smart is an obvious casualty of that, I think.

I am surprised more people haven’t said the bolded. I agree in general with Perk but I also think it was pretty crappy of Perk (a media person) to come out with that type of statement about one of the Celtics that has frankly given his all pretty much the whole time he was here.  What would have Perk said to a former player, say cornbread if he had said something like that about him?  It is just crappy.

We all know Marcus shoots too much and has his faults, but Brad Stevens is the one giving him the green light to shoot all the time, maybe Perk should be asking that Brad be moved as well?  I think the answer is no, but if all Perk can do is throw veteran celtics under the bus, he should find a different career.

Salary reduction is important.

A better pick would be great. Would Orlando take Smart and our pick so we could take Scottie Barnes? Defense, passing and athleticism at power forward?
