I think for both parties involved it might be best to move on. I can see Tatum and Brown becoming more effective leaders if Marcus leaves.

This season has also shown that Marcus is a slightly above replacement player on the whole. So clinging to him like he's an indispensable piece (i.e. you can't find another tough player anywhere around the league) seems misguided.

I agree but what is his trade value?  It has depreciated a bit this season.

he hasnt had many of those good marcus moments that we all remember.

if anything he's had a couple strange mental lapses at times

i agree that he's not adding much this year unfortunately

so yeah maybe its time to move on

but on the other hand i dont think he's the real problem

he's a decent player on a decent contract and he overall of course plays hard

shouldn't just lose him for nothing.

Quote
"I think something drastic needs to happen and it's not firing Brad Stevens," Perkins said Tuesday on Celtics Pregame Live. "I think that Marcus Smart has ran his course. I think guys are tired of hearing his voice in the locker room. I think guys are tired of his ill-advised shot taking at times, some of his turnovers that he has.

"If Marcus Smart could be just a star in his role, and that means bringing that defensive intensity, diving on the floor for loose balls, those hustle plays on the other end, not trying to do so much. You can see it in people's body language, when he tries to do too much it deflates the team. So I do think the Celtics need to look into moving Marcus Smart this summer, to be honest with you. I think it's ran its course."

I don’t disagree.

Pretty knee-jerk reaction.

Marcus tore his Achilles mid season and has looked slow since he returned. It’s possible next year he looks like a more explosive player once he’s had the full off-season. Goes for a lot of guys.

The other thing is that this team needs accountability, guts, and veteran leadership. You need two or three Smarts, not zero Smarts.

All it would take would be for one team to look at their soft defense and convince themselves that Smart just needs a change of scenery. I wouldn't doubt that Ainge already knows who that team is.

Smart's frustrating to watch but he also could be a great candidate for a fresh start. He's developed years of baggage being the longest tenured Celtic. Let him go into a new team tabula rasa where he has to earn his spot in the rotation. Could be good for him and -depending on the return- good for us.

Can we move on from Perk as an analyst?

Anyway, I've said in the past that I think trading Smart will be an unfortunate necessity. He makes more sense on a contender that just needs him to be a defensive playmaker.  The Celts don't have that kind of infrastructure in place, and they're gonna need to cut salary. Smart is an obvious casualty of that, I think.

well the team doesn't have a need for both Fournier and Smart, so one of them is going to go and frankly Smart makes way more sense since he is under contract and can be traded for something.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

As long as it's not to the lakers.

I like Smart but agree that a shakeup is needed and him leaving would make some sense.

Smart has had a bad year this year. The rest of team was poor also.

My concern is how do you replace him? I can see Pops wanting him, but is his salary out of line?

He didn't help the young guys this year and he should have...that is not a good thing.

Contract year next year and I wouldn't be shocked if he plays well. He is an up and down player and we just had a down.

There will be a rather robust market for Smart I believe.  His contract isn't huge and he is expiring.  Plenty of title contending teams would have a need and a use for him, and he isn't that hard to acquire.

The contract year is literally why they need to trade him this summer. He’s going to go wild next year trying to prove himself for a bigger pay day. That usually means he’ll be a negative to the Cs based off the way he plays. Package him and Timelord together and see if you can snag someone like Clint Capella.

He should have been moved last off season. At the very least at the deadline this year. Another blunder by DA. I said it with Hayward as well. He had a shot to move the guys on a high point, good luck getting value now. Might be stuck this last year.
