I'm feeling close to certain that this Gordon stuff is going to end up as another "we were very close to a deal ...", which will make people very upset.

I'm guessing that the Magic are asking for Smart + picks, while the Celts are trying to do something using the TPE and/or using Thompson, Theis or Kemba, with some picks included.

So it gets reported as "Celts going after Gordon and the talk is around Smart plus picks," while the Celts likely have never actually considered paying such a high price for Gordon + Fournier.

The Magic for their part are trying to get a better return for a guy with 1.5 years left on his deal than cap relief / expiring contracts, one or two of the Celts' undercooked prospects, and a couple of mid-late 1st rounders.

100% rank speculation, surmise, conjecture, etc.  But this is what I'm thinking.

Just a little more on the Aaron Gordon trade front here. An NBA executive, watching from afar when it comes to the Gordon sweepstakes, says he’s not the only name the Celtics are chasing. If he was, the deal would be done. Executing deals with Boston can be tricky. Offers are often made out of Beantown for players not currently on the Celtics’ roster (meaning a third team has to get involved), which can frustrate colleagues looking to make a big deal. 4 hours ago –

When was the last time Danny executed a three way deal?

On draft night.  Kanter went to Portland, #30 went to Memphis, and 2nda came from both of those teams.

So this is suggesting an Orlando deal is done but Ainge is trying to use one of the assets he is getting in another deal and if he can't no deal with Orlando. Interesting

It is interesting.  Is it true?  It seems weird that a rival executive would know the inner workings of our dealings with Orlando, but maybe.

My thought is Ainge has brought up Fournier (or another Magic player) in trade talks with quoted exec. Windhorst seems to be protecting his source with the "who's watching from a distance" line

If you haven't seen B Robb's breakdown I recommend it. He sketches three possible trades (assuming the Cs can't get third teams involved), and I agree with his read that the best possible deal we're likely to see looks something like this:

Celtics offer a first round pick, second round pick and a young wing (Aaron Nesmith/Romeo Langford) for Gordon

https://www.masslive.com/celtics/2021/03/what-would-aaron-gordon-trade-to-celtics-look-like-evaluating-three-potential-deal-scenarios.html

That's close to the two firsts Orlando is asking for, and we really don't want to be adding Smart and another first to get a Fournier rental.

I would rather trade another first than Nesmith or Langford.

I’d definitely trade Nesmith before trading a 1st.  I get frustrated at trade proposals that treat the two as interchangeable.

In addition to the Nuggets, the Boston Celtics remain heavily engaged with the Magic in pursuit of Gordon as well, league sources said. 15 seconds ago – via Mike Singer @ Denver Post

They are not interchangeable because the chances of the Celtics having the 14th pick again are pretty slim. I’d rather trade a probable mid late pick.

Danny should give the Magic a deadline and walk away

Magic is overplaying their hands if they think they can get more than 2 1sts for Gordon

Sometimes its not a bad idea to take the early deal. Before the offer disappears

So if the C’s do trade for Gordon for say, Nesmith or Romeo and a 1st round pick, how much is Gordon likely to command when he becomes and Unrestricted free agent after next season? If it’s $20M+/ year, is that going to prevent the C’s from bringing in a 3rd all star player? Does that also mean that Boston will only be able to retain either Gordon or Smart as their contracts are up at the same time?

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

I mean, why do we need to worry about this at the moment

He is still under teams control for next season.

Obtaining Gordon and getting back into proper playoff contention needs to be the focus
