(Update) Celtics NOT favorites to land Aaron Gordon

I'm feeling close to certain that this Gordon stuff is going to end up as another "we were very close to a deal ...", which will make people very upset.

I'm guessing that the Magic are asking for Smart + picks, while the Celts are trying to do something using the TPE and/or using Thompson, Theis or Kemba, with some picks included.

So it gets reported as "Celts going after Gordon and the talk is around Smart plus picks," while the Celts likely have never actually considered paying such a high price for Gordon + Fournier.

The Magic for their part are trying to get a better return for a guy with 1.5 years left on his deal than cap relief / expiring contracts, one or two of the Celts' undercooked prospects, and a couple of mid-late 1st rounders.


100% rank speculation, surmise, conjecture, etc.  But this is what I'm thinking.

My thought is Ainge has brought up Fournier (or another Magic player) in trade talks with quoted exec. Windhorst seems to be protecting his source with the "who's watching from a distance" line

I’d definitely trade Nesmith before trading a 1st.  I get frustrated at trade proposals that treat the two as interchangeable.

They are not interchangeable because the chances of the Celtics having the 14th pick again are pretty slim. I’d rather trade a probable mid late pick.

Magic is overplaying their hands if they think they can get more than 2 1sts for Gordon

So if the C’s do trade for Gordon for say, Nesmith or Romeo and a 1st round pick, how much is Gordon likely to command when he becomes and Unrestricted free agent after next season? If it’s $20M+/ year, is that going to prevent the C’s from bringing in a 3rd all star player? Does that also mean that Boston will only be able to retain either Gordon or Smart as their contracts are up at the same time?

He is still under teams control for next season.   

Obtaining Gordon and getting back into proper playoff contention needs to be the focus
