I think this quote from Wyc says a lot:

The team does look emotionally drained or burned out. Especially Tatum.

Was everyone expecting something different?

Sure, whether justified or not, there is a ton of very palpable anger in the fan base, but the intelligent owner doesn't make instant, rash, reactionary decisions based on emotions in or out of the organization. And they certainly aren't going to make reactionary decisions to appease an angry fan base that isn't spending any money on the team currently.

Wyc was never going to go over the tax line once Hayward left. Not during empty arena, Covid times with no attendance related revenue incoming. The most intelligent owner related move, at this moment, is to let things be until the off-season. Assess what Danny's strategy is to build the team back to contending status. Assess Stevens overall performance and whether he still commands the locker room. Decide if Ainge and Stevens are part of the solution or part of the problem and then do what he feels is right.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Not sure what people really expected out of Wyc. It is basically his job to be boring. There is a reason the only owner non-NBA fans know is Mark Cuban (oh, and Donald Sterling...yikes) - these guys typically aren't overly controversial.

Anyway, we'll see how it plays out. Still plenty of time before the trade deadline and we'll have a better idea if we're actually good or just blah. I'm okay with waiting until the offseason to use the TPE, but a lot more teams will have cap space to absorb big contracts. Heck, we're even talking about finding a suitor for Kemba. Don't see any reason to go way into the tax this season for a marginal upgrade, but would be more than willing to offload some salary keep us under the tax if we do decide to use most of the TPE.

I knew not using the TPE until after the season was done would happen. Just typical of this management

In Wyc's defense: they've shown absolutely nothing to justify him spending a lot more money this year.
There’s always an excuse. Always some line about “it not being the right time” and “there wasn’t anyone we wanted”. Every single time. Getting pretty sick of it

Yeah, this is what I worry about. And the problem is the TPE has an internal clock that will expire, and there's no guarantee that someone better will be available this offseason that we can get with the TPE. There's a decent chance if we don't use it this deadline we won't use it for a bigger name, more expensive player this summer.

And they always have the excuse that you always hear of, "Well, we tried, but the price was just too high."
Recovering Joe Skeptic, but inching towards a relapse.

You're right. Winning a championship  cost. Look what the Lakers gave up for AD. What The Clips gave for George. At some point Danny needs to go all in.

Hope this team implodes. One of the most pathetic interviews I've ever read. Still blaming Kyrie? You're kidding

Worst part about the whole thing is this could have been mostly avoided during FA, if the deal for Turner and McDermott was actually on the table that's abusrd

That's the spirit. Only true fans root for their team to actively suffer

Obviously it wasn't serious. However Ainge's job this FA was as putrid as they get. Hayward aside, the team managed to downgrade in terms of role players, which seemed nearly impossible. You seem to agree with my point of view regardless, having Wyc play the apologist again, and blame KYRIE again is almost funny. I mean how much blame can you put on one person? Is it Kyrie's fault that they won't use the TPE too now? The Celtics made it to the ECF last season, WITHOUT Kyrie (in 2018 too). Therefore, they could've easily built on that squad and had a contender this year. Using that excuse 2 years later is pathetic. Did Kyrie refuse to sign Turner and McBuckets too

nothing really new divulged but the commentary on Kyrie does suggest that getting him and keeping him was the big plan to put us into contention.  With him, I think their thought was Al and Hayward would stay and the J's continue to develop and the team is a contender last year, this year and probably another few years before having to retool.

Maybe the choice was between Irving and Stevens.  Wasn't Stevens already extended?

Seems to me Wyc is between a rock and a hard place. Not much he can do.

The management has made a lot of mistakes. The first one was trading Perk.

Danny hasn't traded well. Something wrong with his approach. All he really has to show for his team in the draft is Tatum, Brown and Smart. The rest makes for a weak bench.
And he is in constant cap  trouble with unlucky injuries to very expensive players (Hayward, Walker) with guaranteed contracts.  Tough situation.

He sounded like an owner - one who takes the big picture view and does not overreact - unlike most of us.  ;D
He hesitated for just a half second when asked about Brad, but when you consider the fact that Brad's under contract - for a lot of money - looks like he's going to be the coach moving forward.

What I'd like to have heard Felger or Mazz ask - was about the bench and how Danny's drafting has created the current bench.

But he said it - they're rebuilding, not contenders this season and pretty much said we all need patience. And he's making his bed with Ainge and Brad.

At least barring a huge losing streak that puts them in lottery land....

End of day from his perspective the team has made 4 of the last 5 ECFs with essentially 3 different teams, has been competitive for the majority of Brad's tenure and has drafted JT and JB. If not for Covid the team would probably be playing to a sold out Garden win lose or draw. He's clearly in it for the long haul and doesn't have a championship or bust, you're only as good as your last loss mentality.

Of course, the things people say in public often have little bearing on what they say in private. Most of us, out of some perverse feeling of "I want to know if they're hurting like I do" mentality, want to hear owners, coaches, or players, call each other out in public. We want Wyc to say that the team is trash and that Brad is trash and will be fired if things don't improve, and that Danny is trash for failing to foresee that Hayward would leave and failing to replace him, and failing to build a decent bench. I mean, if Joe Bloggs sitting on his couch eating nachos and drinking Bud can see that they're trash, it's obvious, why can't they see it?? Unfortunately that type of discourse is a luxury that fans like us, whose words have little consequence, can use on mediums like forums, Twitter and talk radio. But I have a feeling that behind closed doors some very different conversations are taking place. Especially with Wyc, Danny and Brad, as to what the shape of this team should look like going forward.
Any odd typos are because I suck at typing on an iPhone :D

I'm not at all surprised that Wyc was publicly supportive of the staff and players. I would have been a little shocked if he had done otherwise.

My take-a-ways from this interview are:

He's engaged. He's always seemed that way to me, but we've had owners who were not, so it's still worth noting. I think it's always better when the owner is involved.

He's looking past this season already.

He's not happy. He may sound calm and even complimentary on the surface, but he also sounds frustrated with the state of things.

Wyc is not mad at Danny or Brad or Jays. Bc deep inside he knows it starts with him. And lack of funding for this season.... due to covid/economic turmoil
