At what point will Ainge make a move this season? (poll)

I'm hoping things turn around soon. But there is also a real possibility the team loses the next 5 out of 7 games or something like that.  Some tough matchups coming up, starting with the GSW tonight.

The Celts right now are 10-8

At what point, do you think Ainge is going to make a move if things become slippery

if record becomes 12-17? (out of playoffs)

12-22?  (lottery bound)

What if its doesn't become this bad,  but Celts are unable to beat teams like the Spurs or better??

A forum member pointed out, that Ainge rarely makes mid season trades.  Major tradess anyways.  The last one was the Rondo trade which seems eons ago.   And then add to this, the rumor that many gms don't want to be another Danny Ainge trade victim.

If the team is struggling and it looks like this is going to turn into a bit of a lost season, making a move would not make a lot of sense unless it's in the form of trading away one of the very few veterans on the roster (e.g. Theis / Thompson / Teague) for some value.

They are 2-5 in the last 7.  Losing to playoff contenders and beating low end teams

So if beating these low end teams means not falling off the cliff. Fair enough

But it's not enough just to win these type of games

I feel like we've seen this story way too many times. Rumors will swirl, we'll get excited. And ultimately the C's do nothing because giving up a roster spot of someone like Carson Edwards is too much as is giving up a pick in the mid-to-late 20s for some help. Kind of like how they kept Poirier but dumped him anyways this past offseason.

Sorry to sound pessimistic but I'm not keeping my hopes up. They'll probably try to use the TPE after this season, not during it.

Sure, they could make a minor move for depth or a cheap buyout signing. That's about it IMO

I guess it matters whether you think it is reasonable to extrapolate from those 7 games or not.

Several members of the rotation missed some of those games, most notably Tatum. Walker came back and has played badly, but looks healthy so far.

The best case scenario has played out with Tatum and Brown. If the voting occured right now, they'd both probably be 2nd team all NBA. We just lost by one to LA, and they outplayed LeBron and AD.

The rest of the roster looks pretty shaky. Will that change? I would hope so. Is Walker a G-league level point guard? Probably not. We will probably get some rotation players back soon. It's pretty hard to believe things won't improve pretty quickly.

I think you'll see a move made by the deadline.  This roster is certainly in need of some tinkering.  Although I'm not anticipating anything major.

IMO, there is almost no possibility the team isn't a contender come playoff time, unless JT or JB is injured.

Fans need to have a little patience. One of the most destructive things a team can do is make major moves based on a handful of games.

Kemba looks good physically. IMO, a month from now, he'll be back to his lethal old self, and we'll be steamrolling most teams.

But, in the unlikely event JB/JT stay healthy and yet we're not a contender? Brad Stevens would probably be in big trouble.

was on the fence between a deal at the trade deadline using the TPE or nothing happening.  went with a deal at the deadline once Danny has seen how this team looks as currently constructed and has a better idea of what's needed to move this team in the right direction. 

I'd like to see the TPE used for a real stud of a player but I suspect he'll use it in pieces to bring in 2-3 quality bench players while cutting Edwards and possibly Green or even Teague.  I think Green's been useful and would lean towards GWill being worse than useless so far this season but I can't see Danny cutting a second year player that looked decent as a rookie so my preference would be Teague even though that's highly unlikely

The season is so much different then past seasons that teams really have to be smart about panic over their early season records. Currently the Raptors (8-12) and the Heat ( 7-13) are out of the playoffs. Improved teams like ATL, Cavs and the Hornets are all in the playoffs. I suspect after the allstar break we will see the East standings shake out to something resembling last seasons just with the Nets in the top 3 and a tight competition between for the last few playoff spots. ( The play in for the 7th and 8th seeds should be great!).

As for the Cs making a move I suspect it will be an underwhelming trade at the deadline to add a youngish (27-30) vet wing to this roster.   

HIGHER COST OPTIONS (1st rd pick(s))

Fournier, FA so not idea but a great fit as 6th man

Ross, inconsistent but signed to a decent contract for 2years after this one. Another nice 6th man option

Thad Young, older then I would like at 32 but under contract next season and having a nice season (really passing well)

LOWER COST (2nd round pick guys)

Alec Burke, FA but nice bench scoring option

Tomas Satoransky, having a down year coming off of Covid but should be attainable for cheap, is under contract next year, and as a 6'7 PG he bring a lot of utility to the bench unit

Wayne Ellington, rather then looking at JJ Redick the Cs can trade for Ellington using one of their smaller TPEs

I think most likely we see Teague traded away to a team with space for a future 2nd ( and Cash) to be then bought out and a player like Burke or Ellington is added via the smaller TPE and a 2nd.

Trading Smart just because the team is having a tough year during the age of COVID is

(a) blasphemy
(b) incredibly dumb
(c) hurts way more than it could possibly help


As for trading Kemba, you aren't getting anything close to fair value.  Kemba has the ability to produce at an All-Star or near All-Star level at a key position.  Without Kemba this team places an even greater offensive burden on Jayson and Jaylen.  You would also be trading away a really great locker room presence at exactly the time when the team is going through some adversity.


All around, sounds like a dumb idea to me.

My favorite idea right now is to use the TPE to acquire Garrett Temple and Thaddeus Young from Chicago

I do not expect the Celtics to use the big TPE from the Hayward trade during the season. Certainly not all of it. They are too close to the luxury tax line and the hard cap.

Once you hit the offseason, the contracts of Theis, Teague, Ojeleye, and J. Green come off the books. That's $10.8m. At that point you could comfortably give up some picks in exchange for a player on a fat contract, all the way up to the $28m if you wanted to. By contrast, if you do so this season it'd either be much messier, or you'd end up giving away players you actually need for this season.
