What does the team need that can they can afford AND will impact the season?

I'm not a Kemba fan, but his contract will be unmovable, so the next obvious place for a major upgrade is center.

Whiteside?  Major headcase, major talent, playing for pennies.
Drummond?  Major talent, major expiring contract.

The other usual suspects aren't worth the trouble.

Whiteside makes sense from a low cost/low risk/high reward sense.

Maybe the better questions is when do the teams that have what the Celtics want decide to be sellers?

When the trade deadline nears, so does buyout season. I expect Ainge to keep his first-rounders and go after some of those buyout candidates, getting them for practically free via the TPE.

This benefits our trading partner because they save money buy not having to agree to a buyout. And it gives us that player's bird rights for the future.

If I'm Ainge I'm letting teams know to call me before the deadline if they plan on buying a player out.

He's not giving up our picks unless a really good player becomes available.

Good call

Didnt know you could sign FA utilize TPE

I thought you could only use it(absorb) via trade

However players bought out... why would they want to join the Celts? Look at what happened to Marvin Bagley. I dont remember the last time someone decent bought out joined the Celts

Danny should call his buddy Jordan and see what it would cost to obtain Malik Monk.  He is the kind of scorer/off the bench instant scoring this team could use

Except you can't use non-simultaneous TPE's to sign free agents

Yup

Tbh I find it too controlling/restrictive a team cant combine the TPEs

What is the problem?

triboy misunderstood kraidstar's post.  He wasn't saying use the TPE on free agents, he was saying tell teams rather than buy your player out just trade them to Boston and get a TPE and save the money.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah

I think kraidstar is referencing picking up said players through claiming them off waivers for their current contract price. That is allowed with the TPE.

Thing is, why do that, especially if the player is making a lot of money, when you could try to sign them at a vet min price and let the team releasing said player eat the salary?

But, if Danny thinks that player could contribute in a majorly positive manner, grabbing them off waivers might guarantee them being on the Celtics roster, as opposed to risking said player signing at the minimum, elsewhere, rather than in Boston.

Yeah, just wanted to clarify. I feel as though there are better players to be had than guys who will be waived IMO, but we'll see
