Probably a pipe dream, but I'd happily take Batum's contract provided that the Hornets throw in PJ Washington.

Boston in: Batum + Washington
Charlotte in: Hayward + Edwards

The Hornets avoid cutting Batum, hence they save $9,043,478 a year for the next 3 seasons. The C's get a very promising 3+D prospect in Washington.

PG: Kemba - Smart - Pritchard - Teague
SG: Brown - Romeo - Smart
SF: Tatum - Nesmith - Batum
PF: Washington - Grant - Semi
C: Thompson - Theis - Timelord

That would put the Celtics over the luxury tax apron, which they are very intentionally trying not to cross this season.

They are realistically only going to be able to acquire a player with a ~$14 million contract. Unless they begin to trade away legitimate rotation players, in which case what's the point.
Ugh, you're right. Forgot we got hard capped by signing Thompson.

Still...taking on a player (like George Hill or an actually good veteran wing) with the TPE would be a nice reward for Hayward's departure.

Bingo. I don’t see any way the Celtics take back Batum. This team is not going into the tax if it can help it.

Best case scenario is to generate that huge trade exception and keep it open until someone wants to trade away a useful player into it.

Woj just tweeted the deal is still on.

Charlotte is looking to see if someone will take on Batum's expiring to save them from waiving him.

Sign and trade will return 27 mill TPE to Boston
'21 Historical Draft
PG: Kyle Lowry / Mookie Blaylock / Mark Jackson
SG: Reggie Miller / Jeff Hornacek / Nick Anderson
SF: George Gervin / George McGinnis / Kyle Korver
PF: Connie Hawkins / Serge Ibaka / Josh Smith
C: Clint Capela / Bill Laimbeer / Jusuf Nurkic

Is there already a thread dedicated to speculating who the Celtics might go after with that trade exception?

No, it would return whatever Haywards first year salary in Charlotte is which would be somewhere between roughly 28-32 millions depending on how they structure it.

I still wonder if John Collins is available. Between Okungwu, Capella, and Gallo, I just don't think he's gonna get the playing time or shots he thinks he deserves.

Now, he wouldn't with the Cs either, but I can't help but be interested in his productivity.

Whatever. Depends on salary structure. No one knows that yet.

I think this is the one we're using because there's no official announcement that the TPE exists yet!

Sounds like OKC is the third team and willing to take Batum but asking for what must be a first rounder from Celtics

According to tradenba.com, his salary next season will be $27,906,977.

2020/21: $27,906,977
2021/22: $29,302,326
2022/23: $30,697,674
2023/24: $32,093,023

Not sure whether this is accurate. Assuming we take back no salary, we'd get a $28,006,977 TPE (Hayward's salary + $100,000).

It says a draft asset, so it could very likely be a second round pick.

Assuming the deal happens and we get the trade exception, would you guys use it to bring back Horford?

Hell no! He's massively overpaid and he's under contract till 2023 (last year is partially guaranteed).

No. That salary is too high at his age. I'd rather focus on getting a wing player.

Is there a difference in signing TT using the TPE vs the MLE? What’s more beneficial to us?
