TPE question:

If we sign and trade Hayward at starting salary of $30 mm, and take back a player of $10 mm and a TPE of $20 mm, can we later package the $20mm TPE with one of our players (as incentive to the trading partner) for a player who makes no more than $20 mm?  Or can TPE only be packaged with draft picks?  This is unclear to me.

I know that a TPE can't be combined with an outgoing player's salary to match the incoming salary.  But if  the TPE matches the incoming salary, can you also send out salary, assuming that the other team has cap space to absorb it?

Thank you.

According to the numbers the team should have upwards of 23 million available to use.

Not sure what numbers this is based on.  What are you assuming for Teague's contract?  It has been reported that it may be for the bi-annual exception (about $3.6M).  It might also be a league minimum I guess.  We also have over $1M in dead cap for Yabusele and Jackson.  Plus we don't know exactly what the rookies will sign for.

You could be right, I don't know, I see it at more like $15M but it could vary depending on a few still open contracts.

Plus I am assuming they won't go over the tax level ($132M) this season with this.  They could in theory go higher to the tax apron which is something like $136M?

It'd have to be completed as two separate trades.

I think this is why the C's are trying to get  athird team to take on Batum to get as much of a TPE as possible, instead of taking back one of CHA small contracts.

Would you guys be happy if we used the TPE to get Lou Williams? He's reportedly on the block

Didn't the Celtics acquisition of Jeff Teague fill that need ?

In theory not if Kemba is going to be aggressively load managed

Suppose the Charlotte deal falls through after all of this?

That would be lol worthy.

It won't. Charlotte would just waive and stretch Batum and then sign Hayward.

Hayward to Charlotte will happen whether the sign and trade portion falls through or not.

Hayward could pull a deandre Jordan

Jeff Teague is a backup PG, that can also provide some offense. Lou Williams is straight up buckets off the bench. The ultimate 6th man scorer off the bench.

Yeah, Lou Williams is absolute firepower off the bench. He can carry the offense for long stretches.

The Clippers want a PG in a return though.  I've heard they shopped Williams and/or Beverly for an upgrade and found no takers on either.  I don't think they are just going to sell off Williams as he is about their only tradeable piece and they want to upgrade.  Now if they found a PG they liked and needed draft picks or something to send to that team, I could absolutely see it as a 3-Team trade.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

Lou Williams efficiency isn't very good and it's been getting worse. Yes he puts up points but he also gobbles up possessions. He is a massive defensive liability and just a terrible playoff performer.

But, if you can get him for very little using the possible TPE from a Hayward trade, you go out and get him. He basically takes Edwards role and elevates that role into the rotation. I would expect Stevens to use Sweet Lou wisely to maximize his contributions and hide him on defense, minimizing his deleterious effects.

He would be an improvement by the team

One thing I thought of is if we got a TPE to NOT use it this season, and wait until next offseason just before it expires when we are not hard capped by the tax apron.   If Hayward can sign a contract where it decreases every year so we get the maximum TPE we can get even better.  Say for example the TPE is 34.502 mil we could just sneak in Beal in a trade next year. Lol

It just may open more doors to trade for a max or near max level player by waiting it out after the season.  I would offer a Jrue Holiday like trade 3 first round picks and 2 pick swaps for this type of player as I expect us to be very good over the next several years.

The most the TPE can be is a little more than $32 million and that's only if Hayward takes a declining salary every year, which is rather unusual.

The more likely outcomes are he gets an even $30 million a year every year making the TPE $30 million or he takes 8% raises every year and so his first year starting salary would be about $28 million, which would be the size of the TPE.
