I really don't get this whole Detroit/Dedmon thing. He has 2 years, $13.3 million remaining. Straight up waiving him would make no sense since it gives you 2 years of massive dead cap (when you could keep him this year and then try to move him next year), but stretching would mean $5.3 million in dead cap for the next 5 years.
Did they seriously learn nothing from paying Josh Smith that much for 7 years?
To avoid making yet another post about this: SERIOUSLY WHAT ARE YOU DOING PISTONS THIS DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE. WHY
Just read that Dedmon is only guaranteed $1M in 2021-22. If that's the case, it makes more sense...but it still really doesn't make any sense. That's an awfully big contract to cut w/o attempting to trade him first. It's not like Dedmon is horrible or anything.
If it's non-guaranteed then that's less bad. They would still be able to stretch the guaranteed amount over 5 years, so just under $3 million a season. Had they kept Snell, they would be looking at $12 million in 1 year or $4 million per year for 3. So there's some logic there.
But, yeah, they should have been able to find another home for him
