Tools are similar to John Stockton, the question will be does he have that level of smarts?

Now this is too much!   lol

Stockton, Mark Price....

I think we should temper expectations

If Pritchard can be productive/impactful as Van Vleet...   that is what I'm hoping for

On the lower end,  a taller Dj Augustin -  long career productive backup pg

Kyrie is liable to turn him inside out and break a few ankles

I look at Peyton Pritchard and I see a star in the league. All you guys reducing him to a bench player do not get that players make plays. You are just looking at him and underrating him because of his size. This guy is a player he is no ones off the bench scrub.
I don’t see star potential at all.

Undersized. No outlier strengths. Unexceptional athleticism in any category.

In order to be a star at his size with his athleticism he’d need to be 99th percentile in something. He looks quite good at everything but that won’t be enough.

He has Reggie Miller range for threes... Have you seen his range?

I feel like Pritchard is a poor man's Chauncey Billups.  Tough guy who is not overly big or athletic, but has enough of both to get by.  Makes up for lack of standout physical gifts with excellent BBIQ and by simply playing hard on both ends of the court.   Quality ball handler and playmaker, with a dangerous outside shot.

Not trying to suggest that Pritchard will ever be as good as Chauncey was, but his skill set, personality and play style reminds me a lot of him.  The things he brings are things the Celtics really need.
I was seeing a lot of Chauncey actually. Really good use of screens and has the ability to put up jumpshots from 2 feet to 25 feet

I don't know. Billups handles wasn't all great/fancy.  He also took a while to warm up in the league

He was strong but played with calmness. Pritchard = someone lit his butt on fire

I do get the using the screens efficiently comparison

I do not see Billups at all. Billups was a slow but rather strong and crafty PG. Pritchard looks like he is going to be a pest like a ping-pong in there.

McConnell can only dream that he can handle the ball and shoot like Pritchard

If we skip comparing him to another player and simply put...

He is an above average shooter

He plays harder than the guy he's up against

He leads through example on defense

Using those three facts?

He's better than plenty of NBA point guards

He's a 6th or 7th guy who has no problem taking a huge shot in a game.

If Pritchard is 70% of what is above and we don't know this yet?

Every GM wants him on their team.

I love Pritchard (so far)

But let's wait until mid season or so before we crown him the next Bob Cousy - Steve Nash clone.

Agreed. Let's pump the break a bit. I like what I've seen so far, and I liked what I saw in college (I'm the one who made this thread!), but... it's been one preseason game. We have no idea how good he's gonna be yet.

Of course - but preseason is all about seeing things that make us think a guys got a shot (a chance) v. looks like it might be a wasted pick.   We’re proven right or wrong over time and we’re all wrong plenty.
This guy looks like he’s got a chance to make it — after 1 preseason game.  It’s not a terribly convincing resume at this point but it’s better than him looking lost, slow, and overwhelmed.

Do you consider VanVleet a star? Or Dragic? Or Lowry?

What are they "99th percentile" in?
Lowry is in the 99th percentile in butt size ;)  Van Vleet is probably the closest one in terms of tools.  I always thought Dragic was an excellent all around athlete.  Pritchard must be very clever because he looks like he's going in slow motion on his drives to the rim.  The defense collapses and he still finds the blue sky.

I 100% agree that it's very encouraging that he's doing well, and I don't blame people for being excited, because I am too! But some of these comparisons to HoFers are practically setting this guy up to fail. It's a bit soon to ordain him our starting PG.

I agree, but he did win the Cousy award for best pg in college basketball last year.
