Boston keeping semi. Gross

tradeable contract.

And the dude is making $1.75m. This is like complaining about your 99-cent McDonald's cheeseburger.

I don't get the Semi hate.

He hits threes at 38%. He hits corner threes at an elite 45%. He is a top notch defender at the 3/4 positions. He is a good 10th man in the rotation guy for under $2 million a year.

If you are expecting him to dribble/drive the lane, be an exceptional passer, or draw fouls to get to the line, yeah, you will be disappointed but that's not his game. He plays a role and he does it very well for his pay grade.

My guess is Semi will be a better all around player next year than either first rounder Ainge just took. And if Ainge doesn't think so, picking him up as salary filler for a trade is a good thing.

Just don't understand the moaning and groaning of making the absolute right move in picking up Semi's option.

We lost in the ECF last season. We have to blame someone.  It wasn't fault of Tatum or Smart for playing hero ball at end of games.

It was all Semi's fault.

Don't you get it??

We are Celtics fans, therefore we blame everyone from the top down for playoff loses. We even blame the TV crew and the people working the concession stands.

don't forget those hated grounds keepers ....all their fault too!

Semi is still non-guaranteed for a few more days even though they picked up his option.  So he could easily be waived if he's not involved in a trade.

Him opting out doesn't really take any options off the table other than him playing out this season on an expiring deal.  That's it.

Super weird and annoying how everybody is acting like this is the end of the world.

Reminder:

Hayward was available and playing at a high level for approximately 3-4 months out of the last 3 seasons.  Him leaving for nothing would be bad but the team is still very good and has options to improve.

I polled this board a month ago, and the vast majority felt if Hayward had been healthy we would have beaten the Heat and gone 7 games with Lakers.  So while you're point is correct, it doesn't discount the fact that when he is healthy, we are a much better team.  We just are.

Sure, but there's no discounting the fact that they've been a very good team without him.

I think a lot of people have lost sight of how good the team has been without Hayward in the midst of feeling bad about the idea of losing him for nothing.

We still have a very good team no matter what Hayward does!  It's not the end of the world.

The issue is that he doesn’t put the ball in the hoop.

He’s 482nd in the NBA in scoring per possession.  We literally play 4-on-5 when he’s out there.  The majority of his 3PTs are with nobody within 6 or more feet, because teams are doubling off him.  If teams have a defender closer than six feet, he shoots beliw 30%.

His defense isn’t good enough to make up for the zero contribution on offense.  He doesn’t rebound, and he’s not a good passer. He’s cheap, but he’s borderline useless.

As usual you talk sense.

This past season he became a markedly better paint protector and was one of the league leaders in charges drawn per possession. Brad put him on Devin Booker and Pascal Siakam, the latter in the playoffs. He upped his FT% to grade-A and led the team in turnover %.

He’s the hardest worker on the team, doesn’t get hurt, and you know what you’re going to get every night.

I could go on but the bottom line is he helps you win. At under 2 million.

Re-upping Semi Ojeleye is a no-brainer.
'I was proud of Marcus Smart. He did a great job of keeping us together. He might not get credit for this game, but the pace that he played at, and his playcalling, some of the plays that he called were great. We obviously have to rely on him, so I’m definitely looking forward to Marcus leading this team in that role.' - Jaylen Brown, January 2021

Yeah we desperately need guys who can put the ball on the floor and attack space off the dribble.  Semi on offense is basically spot up only.  It's not a moral failing or something, I can see that he tries very hard.  He's just not good enough to be in the rotation of a really good team.

Time for Brown and Tatum to step it up as passers. Hayward really brought that when he was on the floor.

If we get nothing for Hayward I think I shop Kemba.

Go all out young talent
The Celtics got to the ECFs in the playoffs without Gordon. No need to purge all the vets. Actually what Boston needs is more vets and less youth.

Trading Kemba for more youth would seriously hurt this team's chances of being a contender right now

Assuming he is going to get fully healthy. Huge assumption, no?
Actually a minor one. Injured in the playoffs Kemba put up 20/5/4 on shooting of 44/31/85. During the regular season, while healthy he put up 20/5/4 on 42/38/86. Injured Kemba is still pretty dang good.

Also, championship teams are never young. They are littered with 30+ year old grizzled vets that are nursing some kind of hurt they play through. Just like Kemba could be.

There didn't seem to be anything major in Kemba's medicals that were released. It looks like he is just going to have to manage some arthritis for the rest of his career. And while arthritis could shorten his career, it is certainly isn't going to massively affect his game right away. He's just going to need to be time managed better and go through a bunch more physical therapy during the year.

Potential implications for why we might not have heard about any S&T options yet.
Was thinking the same thing when I read how Bogdanovic never agreed to the S&T. I thought: smart guy. Don't admit you were tampered with, let the teams take all the heat. Especially after all the tampering that was so blatant last year. The NBA had to get tougher this year.
