Sham reports Hayward opts out and will become a free agent.

Ugh. Worst case scenario.
Not necessarily. There are 3 scenarios right now:

1. He signs a long-term contract with the C's.
2. He gets traded via a sign and trade.
3. He walks for nothing. This is the worst case scenario.

Not necessarily. He has to opt out in order to do a sign and trade and you can't finalize those deals yet. Sure, you can make and announce them, but can't finalize them yet, so that is still very much a possibility.
Good point, still a lot to play out.

Hope we can at least get something in return for him

Umm, isn't this a necessary step for a sign-and-trade or a contract extension? It doesn't that we're getting nothing for him yet. I think people need to wait a minute before the doom and gloom starts.

Yuck, I would have at least like to have gotten a trade exception.  This hurts.

Still can.

Please tell me more.  How so?

We still have his Bird rights.  If, say, we signed-and-traded him into Atlanta’s cap space, we would get a TPE equal to his first year salary.

At least all those fans concerned about Wyc paying the luxury tax there is one less thing to worry about.
Celtics the absolute financial champs this decade!

They keep saying they will pay the tax for a championship squad so what message does that send?
The message is that Danny never went all in and may not even do it if he wants flexibility any given season

That this isn't a championship squad if they keep Hayward for that money

So with his Bird rights Cs can offer him more money than any other team? Not that they would, but that could help in a sign and trade?

Fair point. We aren't at worst case yet, but its more on the table.

And with option 3, AFAIK only the Hawks and Knicks are actual options. So 1 and 2 are still probably the most likely options.
I'm bitter.

Yeah, all hope is not lost. I am not so sure how great it would have been having a $34M Hayward on a one-year contract anyway. Hopefully we can get something for him.

Him opting out doesn't really take any options off the table other than him playing out this season on an expiring deal.  That's it.

Super weird and annoying how everybody is acting like this is the end of the world.

Reminder:

Hayward was available and playing at a high level for approximately 3-4 months out of the last 3 seasons.  Him leaving for nothing would be bad but the team is still very good and has options to improve.

  • GOT IT!!!
Now you have to hope he wants to use lottery teams as leverage to be traded to a playoff team instead just taking the largest salary he can get.

Hayward is trash if he doesnt agree to a sign and trade.

Treating a team that paid him almost 100 million dollars to watch basketball like this is pure punk move.
