What I'm hoping for:

TJ Warren + TJ McConnell + Doug McDermott

($21.64 salary)

for

Gordon Hayward (3 years $75+ million)

+

Semi Ojeleye, Enes Kanter, or Vincent Poirier

If that's what Gordon signs for then I'd rather it be with us, but I wouldn't hate that deal.

Just keep Kanter, include Poirier if needed and let Semi walk
I'm bitter.

Going to lose him for nothing. And then have no real path to upgrade the bench

Full MLE + BAE

That's a real path.

How much is that going to amount to?

Are there any FA destinations for Hayward beyond NYK and ATL?

I'm comfortable in assuming that Hayward is not going to those.

In order for him to "get a multi year deal"...he must "opt out" here.

I will make one conclusion, he is leaving one way or the other for this reason....the parties involved have had plenty of extra time to get a "re-sign at a lower price deal done."

"I'm going to another team."

Which team is viable?

Please, don't tell me it's the Cav's, despite being convenient to Indiana, that isn't a place top players want to go.

Hayward's relationship with the Cs org is good. He presumably wants to go to a team where his role is larger and more straightforward, and were he can secure long-term money the Cs can't and shouldn't pay him. He's also presumably discussed this with Ainge and Stevens, and they've agreed to try to work together to find a mutually agreeable and beneficial outcome.

In other words, there's a puncher's chance they have the framework for a sign-and-trade in place, and the details are being ironed out. We'll soon find out, but in the meantime, all the venom is a little much.

On Felger and MAzz some one reported they have been working on a trade with Indy, it was suppose to be on draft night, but couldn't come to an agreement. but they are still talking, so a S&T is still possible.

only part of this I do not understand is why dumping a 34.2 million contract does not give you cap relief that is equal to the salary dump.

Below luxury tax

They re upped Brown. Used a nice chunk on Kemba last off season

No extension to Brown or Kemba .... lots of space

Hayward is trash if he doesnt agree to a sign and trade.

Treating a team that paid him almost 100 million dollars to watch basketball like this is pure punk move.
Rofl. Players don’t owe teams anything. Are we trash for the way we treated IT? Or is it fine and dandy for players to be treated like livestock by fans & organisations, but they’re “trash” if they look out for themselves?

Exactly. It's a business with hundreds of millions of dollars at stake. Loyalty is figment of the fans imagination.

That said, we still have his bird rights and depending on how badly he wants Indy, we can still do sign & trade. Perhaps the issue was the $34.2m was too much to match in salary for Indy but getting him at a multiyear deal at a lower figure (in the range of $25m maybe) makes a deal easier... Or maybe not. Who knows.

would a sign and trade be possible if he had opted in? What limits would an opt in have placed on a trade?
If he opted in the $34.2 million would need to be matched. Heck, maybe $38+ million depending on who pick up.the trade kicker.

Now, in a sign and trade, the matching salary coming in can be much lower

Ditto. That's a ton of salary to match. I'm speculating, but maybe that had issue sending Turner and another piece they like in TJ Warren or McDermott. Theoretically, a starting salary for Gordon at $25m means Indy could just send out Turner and another small salary.

Because we are still over the cap. Brown's salary increases by $17 million, Tatum's by ~$2 mil, Kemba's by ~$1.5 mil, Smart's by $1 mil, then add our picks, etc., and with no cap increase that means that we're over (or under by less than the full MLE, which means that we're better off staying above the cap, since you would have to waive the MLE to get under)

Edit: Kanter's $5 million (signed after we went over the cap) also gets added in here. That's $26.5 million just from those 5
I'm bitter.

Yuck, I would have at least like to have gotten a trade exception.  This hurts.

Still can.

Please tell me more.  How so?

We still have his Bird rights.  If, say, we signed-and-traded him into Atlanta’s cap space, we would get a TPE equal to his first year salary.

Thanks.  I knew that, just overreacted in the moment.  Hopefully, we can get something for him or keep him.

He doesnt have to agree to a sign and trade to atl or nyk.
Of course he does. If a team signs a free agent without having reached an agreement on a sign-and-trade deal, then the team isn’t permitted to trade that player until December 15 or for three months after his signing, whichever is later.

This is the rule for any given season. Not sure whether the December 15 date has changed this season. In any case, we wouldn't be allowed to trade him for at least 3 months.

Full MLE is like $9 million which gets you a solid role player and BAE is like $2-3 million which gets you a serviceable veteran.
