I don't get the Semi hate.

He hits threes at 38%. He hits corner threes at an elite 45%. He is a top notch defender at the 3/4 positions. He is a good 10th man in the rotation guy for under $2 million a year.

If you are expecting him to dribble/drive the lane, be an exceptional passer, or draw fouls to get to the line, yeah, you will be disappointed but that's not his game. He plays a role and he does it very well for his pay grade.

My guess is Semi will be a better all around player next year than either first rounder Ainge just took. And if Ainge doesn't think so, picking him up as salary filler for a trade is a good thing.

Just don't understand the moaning and groaning of making the absolute right move in picking up Semi's option.

Yeah, I really have no problem with Semi. Good defense and an improved shot with less opportunities to show it off... for cheap. Plus, he knows the system and there's some value in continuity.

Yuck, I would have at least like to have gotten a trade exception.  This hurts.

Still can.

Please tell me more.  How so?

We still have his Bird rights.  If, say, we signed-and-traded him into Atlanta’s cap space, we would get a TPE equal to his first year salary.

How is that meaningful? It just gives us ability to take a bad contract, which be definition means the player we are taking is overpaid.  We don't have draft capital to give for a good player.  I think this board makes too much of TPE.  Give me an example of a player we could get with the TPE, realistically (assume it is $25 mm)?

He made about $750k per game in Boston.
You think that's bad, try figuring out how much GSW are paying Klay Thompson per game for last year and this year.

$68 million/ 0 games.

You can't even figure it out without advanced math.

Hahaha... made me laugh out loud and had to explain to my wife the whole saga
TP to you sir!

Hahahaha. Did Danny bully you in high school? All you do is complain about him.

Bleh. I think the Truth could give us more than semi at this point.

You know how some players have an impact on the game way beyond their stats, well Semi impacts the game negatively way beyond his stats. He may shoot the threes at the clips you mentioned but you could not tell it by watching his game. He probably gets the majority of those numbers in scrub time. Because he hardly comes up big when the team has needed him.

Will miss him if he goes.

"IF" he's gone then that's Kyrie, Al and NOW GH......

It's not the end of the world but this team IS at a crossroads right now.

I guess it's All In for The Jays, Kemba and Smart. Not a bad group AT ALL right there but our window for ERROR just shrunk without GH.

I don’t agree we are at a crossroads.  Disappointing, sure, but we still have Tatum (22) and Brown(24).  They’re both still getting better.  Our future is bright.

Oh, no doubt our future IS bright - I agree with that.

But GH offered quite the cushion for BOS with his playmaking, scoring, shooting, rebounding, solid D.....

If he's gone then this is The Jays team, exclusively. They will need to take the next step and provide what GH did for us.

Tatum's improved playmaking was a real surprise to me. Brown is still improving also. But yes, a secondary playmaker is a need right now, unless skyrocketing Tatum's usage is the plan.

Need to either re-sign Hayward or find a way to get pieces for him that make sense.

Taking the complete green-colored glasses approach -- Pritchard adds a playmaker/shooter and Nesmith adds a shooter.  I'd rather have Hayward but these seem to be more ready on Day 1 rookies than last year.   The Williams's may prove to be akey to next season -- what improvement (or lack) do we see in Grant and/or Rob...

I have no worries about Semi.  I don't hate him as much as others here and I see him as some insurance at the end of the bench.  Spot minutes, a few extra minutes to get C's through an injury.  He's not a rotation guy but C's have had worse guys at the end of their bench.

Man... Gotta say this one hurts... Just didn't see him doing the Celtics dirty like this after the way they bent over backwards to accommodate him from day 1.

I don’t get it either. He plays hard and stays in great shape. He’s an end of the bench guy on a really small contract that’s always ready to play.

Him opting out doesn't really take any options off the table other than him playing out this season on an expiring deal.  That's it.

Super weird and annoying how everybody is acting like this is the end of the world.

Reminder:

Hayward was available and playing at a high level for approximately 3-4 months out of the last 3 seasons.  Him leaving for nothing would be bad but the team is still very good and has options to improve.

I polled this board a month ago, and the vast majority felt if Hayward had been healthy we would have beaten the Heat and gone 7 games with Lakers.  So while you're point is correct, it doesn't discount the fact that when he is healthy, we are a much better team.  We just are.

I would assume letting GH go frees up some money to get a decent center who can defend the paint. Even Horford, if that's possible. Or maybe one of an army of bigs Atlanta now has.

The team has no defensive bigs, except for Williams and maybe Tacko. I don't know what Tacko's status  is, but he should be kept with his unique vertical skills and his athleticism for his height. Williams fits the need, but he lacks the durability to be a dominant player. Maybe that's why he gets limited minutes.

I don't think this team needs any more small ball players. The two scorers they drafted are nice off the bench.

What's needed is a stronger inside game on defense. Maybe a combo of Williams and Tacko, used properly, can do that. Maybe Horford back or another defensive big. Defensive bigs are not that expensive.

Maybe both.
