Celts probably really wanted cap space and draft picks... like trade to Hawks

But Haywards only want to go to Indiana. And Danny doesnt like their proposal?

Hayward is trash if he doesnt agree to a sign and trade.

Treating a team that paid him almost 100 million dollars to watch basketball like this is pure punk move.

Remember IT?

Rofl. Players don’t owe teams anything. Are we trash for the way we treated IT? Or is it fine and dandy for players to be treated like livestock by fans & organisations, but they’re “trash” if they look out for themselves?

Exactly. It's a business with hundreds of millions of dollars at stake. Loyalty is figment of the fans imagination.

That said, we still have his bird rights and depending on how badly he wants Indy, we can still do sign & trade. Perhaps the issue was the $34.2m was too much to match in salary for Indy but getting him at a multiyear deal at a lower figure (in the range of $25m maybe) makes a deal easier... Or maybe not. Who knows.

would a sign and trade be possible if he had opted in? What limits would an opt in have placed on a trade?

Yuck, I would have at least like to have gotten a trade exception.  This hurts.

Still can.

Please tell me more.  How so?

We still have his Bird rights.  If, say, we signed-and-traded him into Atlanta’s cap space, we would get a TPE equal to his first year salary.

Thanks.  I knew that, just overreacted in the moment.  Hopefully, we can get something for him or keep him.

He doesnt have to agree to a sign and trade to atl or nyk.

Why wouldn’t he?

It’s more whether NY or ATL accommodates it.

I've defended Hayward to the death, his injury was gruesome but the reality is we haven't been able to depend on him to stay fit and even if nothing is returned, getting out from the albatross that was another year of a poorly returning contract is a win in my eyes.

A sign and trade would be preferable but I'm fine with cap space.

What I'm hoping for:

TJ Warren + TJ McConnell + Doug McDermott

($21.64 salary)

for

Gordon Hayward (3 years $75+ million)

+

Semi Ojeleye, Enes Kanter, or Vincent Poirier

Sure, but then he would have to play for the Hawks or Knicks

Hayward's relationship with the Cs org is good. He presumably wants to go to a team where his role is larger and more straightforward, and were he can secure long-term money the Cs can't and shouldn't pay him. He's also presumably discussed this with Ainge and Stevens, and they've agreed to try to work together to find a mutually agreeable and beneficial outcome.

In other words, there's a puncher's chance they have the framework for a sign-and-trade in place, and the details are being ironed out. We'll soon find out, but in the meantime, all the venom is a little much.

If he opted in the $34.2 million would need to be matched. Heck, maybe $38+ million depending on who pick up.the trade kicker.

Now, in a sign and trade, the matching salary coming in can be much lower

Going to lose him for nothing. And then have no real path to upgrade the bench

This is what I'm saying --- people are so emotionally invested in Hayward but he's barely ever been able to really play at the level we expected when we signed him.

That's not his fault but it's still weird to act like the franchise cornerstone is leaving.  He's been a minor part of the on-court product over the last 3 years.

We can give them a 2nd acquired from trading #30.

Full MLE + BAE

That's a real path.

only part of this I do not understand is why dumping a 34.2 million contract does not give you cap relief that is equal to the salary dump.
