Vernon Carey transformation

“You’d be shocked. Vernon weighs 237 pounds now. His parents got mad at him, stopped feeding him. No, he’s really worked hard.”

Definitely makes him a more interesting prospect if this is true.

Agreed.   As well he has shot the 3 well at practice

Dig the dedication. I wonder how much quicker/explosive he is now
I'd like to see it verified, or in the flesh, but it's a good move regardless.

However, given his dad was a 340lbs man mountain the idea that Vernon Jr will ever be small seems unlikely to me.

I don't think I have ever seen Vernon Carey play so hard for me to judge.  Based on what I read, all his numbers look good.  I put him in the same category of several of the other top end big prospects such as Toppin, Okongwu, Achiuwa, Stewart, Smith... that we may well have a shot at.  (I have Wiseman in a different category)

Any of these could emerge as the best of the group or maybe someone else.  You just don't know.  None of them are locks, but all of them have enough potential that they could be really good.  One, if not several, of these bigs will be available at 26 and maybe even 30.  I don't know which one will be the best (I actually like Isaiah Stewart as a sleeper), I just hope the Celtics pick one or more of these and somehow get it right.

His size affects his conditioning and wear-and-tear on his body.  It will limit his jumping and movement.  Oliver Miller was nimble once, too.

I like Carey.  I trust Danny on evaluating him.  But, weight does matter.

I'd take a flyer on Vernon Carey at 26 or 30, if his weight loss and 3pt shot is legit. He's an interesting buy low prospect.

At 26 I would consider. And at 30 I think it would be a no brainer.  I saw extended highlights of Carey vs Tillman...  Carey is bigger and was bouncier than Tillman even at 270 pounds.   His mobility was good.  But the concern was the over reliance on scoring/bully ball down the block (ala Jahlil Okafor).  Average wingspan at best and defensive lapses out on the perimeter.

At 240 pounds (plus no hesitation 3 shooting) I could see his ceiling as a Carlos Boozer with a 3 shot.   Or a more mobile/agile Zbo

Similarities - strength/natural scoring instincts/rebounding

So I may not be clear.  Carey is not listed as interviewed or worked out.  Is that the understanding that he was not brought in?

Well worth the risk at 26 in my opinion but not unique in that regard.  It seems like there are going to be some decent big prospects available with that pick.  I admit though, having not scouted them, that I don't know if Carey is any better than say Achiuwa, Smith, Stewart, or even Okungwu (who seems to be trending as the hottest of this group).  I am all for taking a risk on a high upside big at this spot though.  I think the ghost of Jahlil Okafor is making people gun-shy with Carey but we are talking 26th, not 3rd.

There are strong rumors that S. Bey did workout with the Celtics.  But when asked about it Bey has declined to confirm which teams he has worked out with (or not).

I personally think he'd be a great fit.

With Romeo set to miss the early part of the season, they really need depth at wing.  And even when Romeo returns, they would be more complementary, given Romeo is more of a 2-3 wing while Bey is more of a 3-4.   Lack of depth at wing really hurt us in the playoffs, with Gordon, Romeo & Javonte' all injured.
NBA Officiating - Corrupt?  Incompetent?  Which is worse?  Does it matter?  It sucks.

Bey seems pretty polarizing. Some guys love him, others do not.   Danny generally steers away from guys who lack athleticism.  But in this draft, he may fit a need  that you have suggested, and that may be all that we can realistically expect.

There are like 5 workouts we don't know about.  Draftexpress tried to extract as much info last week during the combine.  Some stated who they interviewed/worked out with.  Some didn't disclose.  And many others were missing from the combine

I don't recall if there was anything/interview on Carey.  He did his combine measurements

He was a high touted HS prospect.  And a big player. Both that would naturally intrigue Danny.    1st year college performance from a big man = can't get a good grasp (projections).   It does take time for them to "get it"

IF at 240 Carey rocked his sophomore in college.   Like 20ppg, 10ppg,  35percent from 3 and all around much more mobile and improved.  I could see him step into top 10 conversation for next years draft

Like Footey stated, some guys like him and some don't. Plus he lacks that "extra" athleticism/explosiveness.   I still think a solid comparison is a 6'7-6'8 better 3pt shooting version of Jae Crowder.    His funkyish mechanics works well when he is able to square up, take a dribble or two and then shoot.  But he has poor advance stats in catch and shoots situations.   I also worry a little about his low release. Especially at the NBA level.

I do like his versatility on both ends, motor

But at the end of the day his ceiling is 6'7 Jae Crowder or TJ Warren.  Which is fine...but can you get an even higher ceiling player at 14?

Well, if Devin Vassell slips, maybe.  He is probably not as 'ready to play' right now as Bey would be, but probably has more upside.    But probably would have to trade up to 12-ish to get hm.

Bey looks to be a bit more of a 'complete' player than either Jae or TJ.   He has a more versatile set of offensive skills than Crowder and does a lot more on defense and rebounding than Warren.  But yes, a lot of the appeal of S. Bey is that he looks pretty much ready to contribute right off the bat.

Truthfully, if you can pull out a player of the quality of a Crowder or Warren with the 14th pick, you count that as a win and don't look back.  The average pick at #14 just isn't that good.

What may be appealing to Danny, though, is Bey seems like a pretty wicked smaht kid - he's a bit of an intellectual nerd and would likely fit right in with guys like Jaylen, Grant & Tacko.
