IMO, Vince, Mailman, and Pau are the 3 best picks of the round.  Just overall great seasons from great players (though Malone is obviously limited given he was nearing the end of the line).  Some guys taken that I thought were much more late 4th or 5th round type talents (and Tony Parker I might have back much further than that, always hard to really gauge his career given he was always in someone else's shadow and never was elite at anything - like does he have that extra gear).  Also, some questionable teammate players taken while other questionable teammate players that are vastly superior are still on the board.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

All teams have to be pretty pleased with their teams so far.  Even the trios getting criticism are extremely strong.

I absolutely love my front line.  Nobody is out-muscling Mourning / Malone / Giannis on either end.  It will be interesting to see how I can fill the starting lineup out.

That may be the perception, but 2000 Malone was about as limited as aging 2020 Lebron.  26 / 10 / 5.  He wasn’t Prime Malone, but he was 95% of it.

Denver and Toronto are my two favourite teams thus far. For a similar reason, I just love what they have put together defensively and I believe they have created a great foundation to add more talent to. To allow other star players to fill a role more easily than some other teams are able to.

Keeping an eye on Dallas and Utah. They are both strong as well but their teams haven't taken shape as much as Denver and Toronto already have. Still creating their respective identities.
Not high on Dallas.  Don't think the Lebron and Luka combo works well.  Luka would look a lot better on OKC for example.
Not high on Dallas either and I'm the one making the picks. ;D

I'm just super high on Luka. I truly believe that he's a GOAT candidate in the making. I couldn't pass on him at #33.

Luka and Bron are available for trade. I'd rather build around Bron, but I'm open to the idea of building around Luka. That's how much faith I have in this kid.

If you believe in your guys, just build a great team true to your vision.  Don’t blow it up this early.

Oh I know, but that is really the only season you can select.  Many of the guys in this have so many varied seasons with varying roles.  For the Mailman you get that 1 season.  He was still 4th in MVP voting and it was an excellent season, but that really is your only choice.

Malone and Carter were the 2 guys I was most surprised were still on the board actually (followed closely by Pau).  I had Carter ranked ahead of Pierce, for example.  I think his bad teammate perception is overblown, much like Pierce's bad teammate perception was also overblown.  I mean we tend to forget all of the early "attitude" issues Pierce had, especially the whole bandages and wheelchair stuff.  I think, like Carter, Pierce just wasn't having fun in a bad situation that wasn't his doing and was acting out to try to initiate change.

Part of me sees that too ..

... but then this other part of me starts to think "Gee, how the heck do I matchup against that?"

LeBron and Luka are two big strong physical forward with guard skills. Then you have Ray Allen as a two guard with solid size. That is a huge perimeter trio to matchup defensively against.

And if you go small with Luka at SF and LeBron at PF, every slow footed PF in this Historical League will be shaking in their boots at the idea of having to cover Luka or LeBron. Actually that small lineup is even scarier than the big lineup.

------

It may not flow together beautifully at all times but dang it if it is not effective.

(1) The matchup problems that they can create is massive

(2) Every time the ball swings from strong side of the floor to weak side of the floor you got Luka or LeBron attacking a defense off the dribble that is scrambling to get back into position. That will be lethal too.

For me, given my initial draft spot at 14, its really been about building what I think would be a fun squad finding guys that I really enjoyed over the years and trying to build some sort of cohesive unit out of them.

With the final pick of the third round, the Brooklyn Nets select:  Shawn Marion

This was the guy in my mind when I mentioned All-NBA calibre wings with a less ball dominant game. Excellent pick.

I do have a question.

Not that I think Shawn Marion can't play wing, I believe he can, but his two All-NBA seasons he played as a PF.

Is that a bit of a dillemma?
I think there was a season earlier on during his career that can be looked as an All-NBA calibre season, it wasn't far off from his best two seasons.

It's not concerning to me at all. You're talking about one of the most versatile players to ever play in the NBA.   Guy was a swiss army knife.

I actually rated Malone as a high end All-NBA power forward in '00, his offence was still really high impact for a big imo. Obviously he has defensive issues, but I can see a frontline of Giannis and Mourning just bludgeoning opposing attackers with power, speed and intensity to minimise the damage.

Edit: missed your post that explained why he was limited - yeah I understand your point.

Through his prime Marion played both positions depending on 5 man groupings. Right now Dons has McGrady at SG, Marion at SF and Davis at PF but depending on his 5 man groupings he could very easily have McGrady at SF, Marion at PF and Davis at center and really, not miss a beat in overall quality at those positions. I really like Brooklyn because of that versatility.

Fair point.

His 05-06 season was absolutely fantastic.

Thank you for the kind analysis.  I quibble about Malone having defensive issues, though.  He was an All-NBA defender, at that point the third best defensive power forward behind KG and Duncan.
