I actually think Klay, Dray and Manu are rounds too early.

I put Klay, Ray Allen, and Reggie Miller all right next to eachother in my rankings and considered them all round 5 players.  Three best spot up shooting guards in NBA history with an easy skill to fit into these all-time teams and provide value.  Reggie is a little more clutch, Ray has a little more ball handling, Klay has a little more defense.

Manu I like because he's a guy that you know can come off the bench and perform and be a team player.  At the beginning of the game, I considered him a 6th round target for that.

Dray I think was a bit early.  I don't think his defense would look as amazing against all-time greats as it does today, but he's versatile, can spread the floor, can pass, and is an amazing screen setter.  I think he might defend old-school SFs better than he can the old-school PFs as a primary defender, but still have some versatility/ability to hold his own on switches.

I don't know how to rate George Mikan.

Open to suggestions.
I'm sure that is why he lasted this long.  I was hesitant to take him as well for that reason, but at the end of the day he was the best player on the best team in the league for basically his entire career and he was imo by far the best player available.

He played so long ago, it is really hard to place him.  I mean if you look at his FG%, you think man that is low, but each of his first 3 seasons when he shot basically 43, 41, and 42% he was in the top 5 in all 3 of those seasons.  Even the final 3 when he shot under 40%, he was 17, 12, and 17 in the league.  It was just a different game in the early 50's, but he led the league in scoring, he led the league in rebounding, and he was the best player in the league and on the best team.
While shooting with some of the highest efficiency in the game at the time.

He was a great player relative to his league, but would he project to be a great player in the modern era, even with advances in training and nutrition?

He wasn’t particularly fast or athletic, like Russ or Wilt. He was just 6’10” in a league full of guys who were 6’5”.

It appears we now have our 3rd missed pick of the day. Silky said yesterday he wouldn't be around today but I think he forgot it was two rounds.

RPGenerate, you may make your pick whenever you want.

Mikan was bigger than everyone else, but was a sub-40% shooter.  I have a hard time projecting him in the modern era.
league average in the 51-52 season was 36.7%.  As I indicated in my prior post, Mikan finished in the top 5, 3 times and was in the top 17 the other 3 times for shooting percentage.  So for his time he was a very efficient shooter.

He has the 3rd best win share season in league history (which ironically is the 1 season the Lakers didn't win the title).  He also has the 10th and 12th best win share seasons in league history.  He has the 2nd, 7th, and 10th best seasons in league history by offensive win shares.  His last 5 years in the league, he led the league in defensive win shares and his best of those seasons is the 22nd best defensive win share season in league history (only 7 players have better seasons - lots of duplication as you might imagine).

In other words, George Mikan was a monster on both ends of the floor.  He was the best player on the best team over the course of 6 seasons (5 of which ended in pay dirt).
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson

I think he'd be a lot stronger.  He's got a great frame that reminds me of another recent player's who filled it out nicely.  I think he'd be bigger and better than that guy and a better teammate too.

I actually think Klay, Dray and Manu are rounds too early.

At this point for ME I'm looking for best fit rather than best player.

Picking someone off the ranking boards is fine and all but how would said player react to coming off the bench? To me - most of the BPAs didn't make sense if I'm trying to build a team.

Manu is a proven 6th man of the year, team player and winner. Great all-around player and clutch as well.

To be fair the average height in the early 50's was 6'4".  It is only 6'7" today (and has been 6'7" since 81)

He was a monster relative to a bunch of crappy players, though. That doesn’t mean he’d be even average in today’s league.

It’s kind of like trying to project numbers from China. Sometimes they translate, usually they don’t.

Vince & 'Nique on the same team?  That is an entertaining squad.   Good way to supplement your offense.

Chris Paul running the break with Vince Carter and Dominique Wilkins would make for some very loud basketball. Wow.

I’m leaning towards using him as a microwave high volume sixth man, but I have to see how the rest of my team shapes up. I couldn’t pass up on the talent at this point.
