If they are smart, they should feel that they have significantly more than 0% chance of retaining Howard, but less than 100%.  A smart GM isn't scared of the possibility of losing a potential free agent and getting nothing in return.

If we made a move that involved Dwight Howard, I'd like it to be as a third team in a deal.

How about a deal like this?
http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=nqkvgyg

You'd probably need to give Houston a pick or two as well. Perhaps the CLE 2016 2nd and a 1st from Miami?

Why for Boston: We get Winslow who Danny has targeted before. We also get Luol Deng who I believe would provide excellent leadership for this team and could be pivotal in giving our players the mentality to take the next step. McRoberts could hopefully be flipped closer to the deadline to a contender in need.

Why for Houston: If they intend to shake things up then Whiteside is a great replacement for Howard. On top of that they get Rozier, projected to be a good defender and someone who can share ball handling with Harden. They could be a scary pair in the future. A couple of picks to sweeten as well.

Why for Miami: They get Howard. They seem to be all in and this would give them a 3rd All star in the lineup. They are left with a hole at SF which would need to be filled. They also receive RJ Hunter who projects to be a 3 pt threat.

It's an 8 player trade so it would be difficult to work it out. It's also very tight on cap rules so changing the players involved is more difficult. Miami would need to cut someone to make the deal work.

I don't think Houston and Miami really have a need for us to be involved.
Would Miami really give up Winslow and Whiteside for Dwight Howard? Because that's what this deal is basically about.

I think they could do a straight swap of Whiteside for Howard and both teams ultimately win.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Sure that would make more sense for those two teams, but there's no way they can do it under the salary cap rules. Houston would need to take on like 4 or 5 players in Howard's place. Unless Miami would trade Dragic, Wade or Bosh to Houston? I don't see the point in that.

So we are there to help make the deal work. I'm not sure how many other large expirings are out there to compete with us? Joe Johnson, Eric Gordon, Roy Hibbert, Joakim Noah are all I can think of. I don't see those teams being able to get involved.

  • I'm a Paul Heyman guy.
I'm starting to warm up to a Dwight Howard trade idea.

I think I proposed a David Lee, Tyler Zeller, Jonas Jerebko, 1st round pick (not Brooklyn), and I'm okay with that, even if there's a risk that he might walk or be disruptive.

With all the assets we have, I believe we could afford this risk. We'd still have the Brooklyn pick that could help us in the long run, along with other first rounders to be able to move on, in case Howard bolts. He's still a big upgrade to any of our bigs, a double-double guy despite the decline, and could still contribute defensively.

As far as keeping him happy, well, he could be the guy in Boston, that's a start.
2019 CStrong Historical Draft 2000s OKC Thunder.
PG: Jrue Holiday / Isaiah Thomas / Larry Hughes
SG: Paul George / Aaron McKie / Bradley Beal
SF: Paul Pierce / Tayshaun Prince / Brian Scalabrine
PF: LaMarcus Aldridge / Shareef Abdur-Raheem / Ben Simmons
C: Jermaine O'neal / Ben Wallace

I'm right there with you about this trade you purpose.  I'm okay with giving up basically a 1st round pick for Dwight Howard.  Just to have a chance he could work out.

Yes, two least valuable first round picks plus any 2-3 of our bigs, I'd throw in young or rozier if necessary, we've got so many picks, we can afford to take a risk.

I don't understand the hatred for Howard, he's not the superman anymore but is definitely better than any non lottery pick would turn out to be

The hatred mainly stems from those who view him as a prima Donna. But I think they're still stuck on his Magic/Lakers image. D12's been pretty good in Houston. Mchale was even quoted to say (right before he was fired) that it was only Dwight who was putting in effort on D. I don't think D12 is suited to be a locker room leader, but we already have Smart/IT4/Crowder and CBS for that role.

People have blasted him too about not playing back to backs when 1) the man is coming off injury and the Rockets don't wanna rush him back and 2) he's currently already playing back to backs so that entire "critique" is now invalid.
