Lopez is always hurt,  I'd pass on these assets.

Does the CBA permit a trade's compensation to be adjusted if the central player in the trade (Lopez) gets injured after the trade, say, within a prescribed period (one year).  So say we agree to give up a couple of first round picks, but if he gets injured within a year after we get him (to his chronically injured foot), could we get back one of the picks?  I doubt it is permitted, since I have never seen a deal structured like that, but just wanted to check with the board. Thanks.

The Nets are probably screwed. I think Danny had a good idea that this would happen when we made the trade (but he probably figured the Nets would be pretty good last year and decent this year [and resign Paul]). But yeah, none of their big players are very valuable, either b/c of their contracts, their injury history, or both. I can't see them getting much in return for DWill (still good, not great, and very expensive), Lopez (injury history for a big man will scare teams off, particularly since he's not exactly cheap), or Johnson (good player, insane contract). They also aren't going to be able to bring in any big free agents w/o unloading these guys (which, again, is unlikely), and they have no draft picks. So...barring them finding really good players in the 2nd round of the draft, or finding a time machine, the Nets are probably a lottery team the next 3 years.

My understanding is that conditional picks are really only an NFL thing.  Protecting picks is sort of the NBA version.  Essentially, if Brook Lopez is healthy we expect record A, and thus a pick of a certain quality, whereas if he's not, we expect record B, and a corresponding pick.  So if we protect our pick in the event that we draft as if we had record B, we're essentially protecting against the possibility that Lopez gets injured.  Not quite the same thing, but a similar way to hedge.
