Ainge could have also traded for Butler or George in 2017 on the cheap without giving up the #1 pick.

Use max money slot on like Paul Millsap. Better than Gordon Hayward's corpse.  ::)

Wyc might be in the market for a new GM

Yeah it was super weird how Gordon was able to sign that 4 year deal in July 2017 given that he was already dead.  Surprised Wyc went along with that.  Seems like a pretty large commitment to make without knowing the extent of Danny Ainge's skills in the art of necromancy.
You’ll have to excuse my lengthiness—the reason I dread writing letters is because I am so apt to get to slinging wisdom & forget to let up. Thus much precious time is lost.

In retrospect, at the time it made every sense in the world that the trio of Irving, Hayward and Horford would be able to contend for a championship. Now Horford has declined, Hayward may never be the same player and Irving had an atrocious playoffs run. Can't count on just those three. That ship has sailed.

But on the other hand, if the Celtics trade for Davis and Irving stays, then you're looking at a superstar big man (Davis), all star point guard as secondary option (Irving) an upcoming star shooting guard (Brown) and two veterans with high IQ (Hayward and Horford).

What can't happen is that basically the same team is coming back next season.

Not sure how much better those options would have been if they also snapped their ankles in half 6 minutes into their Celtics careers

Hayward didn't become a "corpse" until long after he was signed--after the injury. When he was signed, it was welcomed here and elsewhere. Ainge just had some bad luck with that injury.  Like the Warriors are having bad luck with Durant's calf injury. The difference in the series. Most people wouldn't give the Raptors much of a chance with Durant and Thompson healthy. But so far, they have lucked out--which often happens in the playoffs. Not that they haven't played well. That GM of theirs has made Ainge look like an amateur GM. Trading for Leonard and then picking up Marc Gasol down the stretch while Ainge was twiddling his thumbs. With the help of unlucky Durant, that GM may have parlayed those deals into a championship.

At some point I will go back and bump up the thread where 90% of people here were over the moon when Gordon chose us back in 2017. Might be some names in there loving the deal that have done a full 180 to danny being an idiot for doing the deal. With the benefit of hindsight of course

Ainge was on a role for awhile. He didn't screw up the Brown pick, handled the Tatum draft very well, successfully recruited Horford, got Hayward to come here just as it looked like he was about to enter his prime and then swung the Kyrie trade, which no one was complaining about.

Then it all fell apart with one Kyrie pass 5 minutes into the first real game these guys all played together.

Every NBA team is one significant injury away from disaster and unfortunately this proved true with the Celtics.

Unfortunately Danny's roster building moves since the Hayward signing haven't been anything to write home about and when you compare this season's moves to what Toronto, Milwaukee & Philly have done, he gets an F.

Ainge has done a very good job overall as C's GM, but he needs to do a lot better than he's done the past 12 months.

Yup. Danny is just another person partly responsible for the 2018-19 Celtics. Just like Stevens and every single player and every single coach.

Stevens and Ainge read this team wrong. And, once they saw it needed fixing, Stevens didn't know how to do it from within and Ainge became paralyzed by a potential Davis addition in the off season, that he didn't do anything to help this team from without. No key additions or subtractions.

Rozier was a clear cancer. He should have been moved. And a big should have been added somehow. There were a bunch of good bigs that became available. He should have been willing to move a pick and salary parts(Baynes, Theis, Yabusele, Semi) for someone. Mirotic, Zubac, JaMychal Green, Enes Kanter, Pau Gasol all could have been possibly attainable. All could have helped. Heck, Henry Ellenson would have been better to have than Greg Monroe for 10 days or RJ Hunter.
