Michael Scotto: The two first-round picks the New York Knicks will receive from the Dallas Mavericks in the Kristaps Porzingis trade will be in 2021 and 2023, The Athletic has learned. Both picks are protected

I’m curious regarding the protections.
So am I.  The Dallas 2019 pick that goes to Atlanta doesn't become unprotected until 2023.  So those 2 picks traded to the Knicks might go in 2021 and 2023 but they could slide to 2025 and 2027.  However I didn't think you could trade a pick more than 7 years into the future.

Great haul for NewYork.

They get a tremendous PG project with gobs of athleticism and a much improving shot.

They get 2 first round picks.

They opened up $40+ million in cap space for next year.

They dumped $50 million in future salary.

They have the possibility of buying out Jordan and Matthews for less than they are owed and save millions.

For bad contracts and an inexperienced young guy who will have played just 48 out of 164 games come end of this year, that is saying he is going to sign the QO and then bolt. THAT'S A STEAL!!!

Yes and also mess up a chance at zion

Unless Matthews, Jordan are traded
It doesn't mess up anything.  Mathews and Jordan don't move the needle and they'll probably get bought out anyway.  The Knicks currently have the worst record.  The bottom 3 teams all have a 14% chance at Zion and the 4th worst team has a 10% chance.   Atlanta is 5th worst but they have 6 more wins than the Knicks so it is highly unlikely for the Knicks to finish better than 4th worst.
Exactly. I doubt Jordan and Matthew's even play a game as a Knick. I could see both being bought out in the coming weeks while not even playing a game.

It’s a salary dump and banking on free agency next summer. They are the Knicks, unless they already know someone is coming they are swinging with a whiff once again only to max the Tobias Harris’ of the world.

They shouldn't.

They should target TWO guys and two guys alone, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. If they miss out on both, just develop the young guys they have in Kevin Knox, Dennis Smith, Jr., Mitchell Robinson and whoever they select in the 2019 draft, and roll the cap space for next year by signing players on one year deals.

Either go for the cream of the crop or continue the rebuild/development path. Any other direction would not be ideal.

I actually think if Irving stays here (hopefully), then NYK could go after Kemba. I think that's an intriguing fit there.

The Mavs get revenge on Jordan for going back on their agreement a couple years ago by trading him to the Knicks who don't want him.  It would be hilarious if the Knicks trade him back to the Clips for Gortat's expiring + Beverly expiring or something.

Why would Irving leave his current supporting cast (Smart, Brown, Tatum, Hayward, Horford, Baynes, Williams) to play with Leonard or Durant with the Knicks group ('19 top 5 pick, Smith, Ntilikina, Trier, Dotson, Knox, Robinson)?

I do think that Walker would take the chance. Yes, Kemba Walker and Tobias Harris are likely options to go to the Knicks. That's probably enough to become a first round playoff exit in the East, but you did have Porzingis. That would hurt me if I were a Knicks fan.

I saw that Walker becomes 29 in May and so far in his career he has won 3 playoff games...
That's sad.

And there's a coming home feel to it. But what do they do with DSJ if they sign Kemba?

Keep as a back-up PG and then trade Ntilikina. As we've constantly seen by the Knicks: they act quickly.
Drafted Ntilikina over Smith, but now they traded for Smith to replace Ntilikina who disappointed, so Ntilikina has to go.
It's like the Hardaway story. The Knicks probably trade Smith again within a year.

Per Woj and Shams, there are two Dallas 1sts going to the Knicks.  Per Woj, they are 2021 unprotected and 2023 top 10 protected.  Those could slide since Dallas also owes their 2019 1st to the Hawks but it is lightly protected until 2023.

As of right now there is only a 9.4% chance Dallas keeps it pick (top-5 protected) and it slides. Those odds can slide a lot depending on whether they finish 6th worst (about 37%) or 14 worst (about 3.5%).

The more I think about it, the more I'm liking the deal for New York as well.

They have plenty of cap space, they can try to sign two top free agents, and they'd still have assets in the form of their young guys to trade for Anthony Davis.

If none of that happens, they still have a solis core of young guys in DSJ, Knox, Mitchell Robinson and whoever they land in the draft. Roll their cap space for another year and continue to rebuild and grow.

I think its great for NY either way.

how they gonna match salaries?
