The more I think about this the better I actually like it for NY. A clean sweep of their salary problems, a recent lotto pick, and an unprotected and top-10 protected 1st is not a bad haul for a guy who apparently hated it there and was making noise about taking the QO and bailing (it was probably a bluff but still, clearly he hated it there).

Now they just have to not Knicks up that available salary, aka blow it all on a couple of sub-elite players. Which doesn't seem too likely. But for now, it put them in a position to wipe the slate clean immediately.

Great haul for NewYork.

They get a tremendous PG project with gobs of athleticism and a much improving shot.

They get 2 first round picks.

They opened up $40+ million in cap space for next year.

They dumped $50 million in future salary.

They have the possibility of buying out Jordan and Matthews for less than they are owed and save millions.

For bad contracts and an inexperienced young guy who will have played just 48 out of 164 games come end of this year, that is saying he is going to sign the QO and then bolt. THAT'S A STEAL!!!

It’s a salary dump and banking on free agency next summer. They are the Knicks, unless they already know someone is coming they are swinging with a whiff once again only to max the Tobias Harris’ of the world.

They shouldn't.

They should target TWO guys and two guys alone, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. If they miss out on both, just develop the young guys they have in Kevin Knox, Dennis Smith, Jr., Mitchell Robinson and whoever they select in the 2019 draft, and roll the cap space for next year by signing players on one year deals.

Either go for the cream of the crop or continue the rebuild/development path. Any other direction would not be ideal.

I actually think if Irving stays here (hopefully), then NYK could go after Kemba. I think that's an intriguing fit there.

Kemba is a guy who is under-marketed. NY certainly would be intriguing.
I think Kemba is an excellent fall back option for the Knicks if they cannot sign Kyrie. I think there is real value in just being a good playoff team as the Knicks for a few years. Rebuild some winning credibility so you can more reliably land big FAs or stars trying to force their way out.

Key is you can't just win one playoff series after you're capping yourself (Melo Knicks), truly be a good team for a number of years.

Reddit users are proclaiming that KP might've been healthy, but the Knicks asked him to sit out so they could tank. He refused, a while ago seeing the writing on the wall, demanded a trade earlier, and the Knicks finally gave in.

This trade must have been in the works for a while.

I live in Jersey, there's been a lot of media speculation that he's been further along in his rehab than NYK has been willing to admit and that he was getting tired of keeping quiet about it.

Call me crazy, but I want the guy that wants to play.

Luka and Zinger will be fun to watch.  Nice move by Cuban.
Indeed.  A bit surprised by the general lack of comments on how Dallas did in this trade.  Personally, I really like what they did.  Luka-Zinger is a great core for many years to come.  They are similar enough in age to build on.  A BIG FA market coming in July and Cuban is not shy about spending the money.

Popular opinion is Dolan and NYK got fleeced

that's what i've heard mostly but how else were they going to clear up all that $ for 2 max players? (which is their goal)

Having Porzingis+room for one max is better than having room for 2 maxes. Trading a young star for some cap space us a bad move no matter how you slice it
I'm bitter.

I think it's pretty close to a win-win to be honest. NYK got a ton of cap space, 2 1sts (one unprotected) and whatever Smith Jr winds up actually being worth, for what sounds like a very disgruntled KP looking for a way out. It was mostly erasing their own stupid decisions but taken on its own it improved their situation.

If KP's knee problems turn out to be chronic after he resigns with Dallas, or if he's still unhappy and forces his way out of town, it'll be the Mavs who'll have been fleeced. If not, they've got a really great young pair to build from, but not much salary cap flexibility or future draft picks to accomplish it.

unless durant's agent told them that he would come as long as they had room for him and whomever he recruits,

and maybe KP wanted to play this year to secure his bag, but they want to tank

or they dont feel good about his long term health enough to pay him the max or close to max that he wants

they have more info than all of us...although they sure could screw it up...hopefully so

The two points about KP are definitely wild cards, but I would bet my left nut that KD doesn't not end up with the Knicks this summer. That is way too far-fetched

Reports that Suns said no to a Porzingis for Josh Jackson swap is inaccurate. What did happen was the Suns offered New York the 4th overall pick, both Miami first-round picks and a young player for Porzingis and the Knicks said NO.

That was at the NBA draft in 2017, I think.

A couple of weeks before Porzingis had missed a team meeting and he was angry at management at that point as you can recall.

The Suns probably thought that there was a chance to step in. And the draft was considered a top 4 (Fultz, Ball, Tatum, Jackson), so what they offered was quite big from a general perspective. The Knicks must have been sure then that they could fix the issues with the Zinger.
