  • I'm a Paul Heyman guy.
The more I think about it, the more I'm liking the deal for New York as well.

They have plenty of cap space, they can try to sign two top free agents, and they'd still have assets in the form of their young guys to trade for Anthony Davis.

If none of that happens, they still have a solis core of young guys in DSJ, Knox, Mitchell Robinson and whoever they land in the draft. Roll their cap space for another year and continue to rebuild and grow.

I think its great for NY either way.

What do they have now to trade for AD? Now that KP is gone I see them as OUT of the AD sweepstakes.

Dennis Smith, Jr.
Kevin Knox
Mitchell Robinson
either one of Zion Williamson / RJ Barrett / Ja Morant / Cam Reddish / Rui Hachimura
Alonzo Trier (decent player, solid off the bench potential)
both Dallas 1st round picks
their own 1st round pick/s

They have plenty of assets now.
2019 CStrong Historical Draft 2000s OKC Thunder.
PG: Jrue Holiday / Isaiah Thomas / Larry Hughes
SG: Paul George / Aaron McKie / Bradley Beal
SF: Paul Pierce / Tayshaun Prince / Brian Scalabrine
PF: LaMarcus Aldridge / Shareef Abdur-Raheem / Ben Simmons
C: Jermaine O'neal / Ben Wallace

Dennis Smith Jr. or no Dennis Smith Jr., the Knicks grand plan is to sign Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.

It will take more then Kevin and Kyrie to be a contender...they'd need a much better supporting cast than Durant and Westbrook
had on Thunder.
It would a very good start though.

What if they have AD? They have the assets to get him now with DSJ, Knox, Robinson, draft picks and to some extent Zion/Barret/Morant. You land AD with those assets, it's now more enticing for Kyrie and KD to come.

We can still easily swamp that deal in value if we want to.

Wow, so two first round  picks plus Dennis Smith is what the Knicks got for Porzingis?  I know the future picks won't be great (Dallas should be decent).  Plus the Knicks get to take in short money for longer money.  They did well.

If that is what the Knicks can get for Porzingis, imagine what the Pelicans should be able to get for Davis.

Great haul for NewYork.

They get a tremendous PG project with gobs of athleticism and a much improving shot.

They get 2 first round picks.

They opened up $40+ million in cap space for next year.

They dumped $50 million in future salary.

They have the possibility of buying out Jordan and Matthews for less than they are owed and save millions.

For bad contracts and an inexperienced young guy who will have played just 48 out of 164 games come end of this year, that is saying he is going to sign the QO and then bolt. THAT'S A STEAL!!!

It’s a salary dump and banking on free agency next summer. They are the Knicks, unless they already know someone is coming they are swinging with a whiff once again only to max the Tobias Harris’ of the world.

They still have a pick that could be #1 overall. Dennis Smith Jr. Kevin Knox. The ability to take on bloated contracts from NOLA.

Porzingis was never going to be in the mix for an AD trade due to his pending RFA status.

The Knicks offered Porzingis for Davis as of today before making this trade but the Pelicans weren't interested.

The Knicks did call New Orleans about Anthony Davis, a source told ESPN's Ramona Shelburne, but the Pelicans weren't interested in the Latvian.

There was uncertainty over Porzingis' willingness to remain in New Orleans beyond his current contract, sources said.

All I knew and don't dispute but limiting the judgment based solely on this trade, it's a home run of a trade for NYK.

If the Knicks have a starting lineup of Smith, Jr., Butler, Knox, Durant and Zion next year, it will all be because of this trade. My expectations are the Knicks management is unlucky and really bad and that the Knicks are still a disaster next year.

This trade for the Knicks hinges on signing 2 high level free agents. They don't get them then it is another knicks trade that does not move the needle

I’m curious regarding the protections.

It doesn't mess up anything.  Mathews and Jordan don't move the needle and they'll probably get bought out anyway.  The Knicks currently have the worst record.  The bottom 3 teams all have a 14% chance at Zion and the 4th worst team has a 10% chance.   Atlanta is 5th worst but they have 6 more wins than the Knicks so it is highly unlikely for the Knicks to finish better than 4th worst.

It's all just a repair of mismanagement.

You're now arguing the opposite way. ''Oh, Porzingis wanted to leave anyway and you get rid of some bad contracts, so this is a great deal.''

While they themselves created the situation to overpay free agents and make their star player unhappy.

If we get rid of all that stuff, you have traded: a 23-year old All Star (Porzingis) for a potential bust (Smith) and 2 future protected late 1st rounders.

I am worried though that they make a big offer for Davis. If they get a top 2 pick then that's very tempting for the Pelicans.
