The Wolves come to the Celtics and say I'll give you Wiggins for Smart, straight up. The rosters are exactly as they are now and, for the sake of the hypothetical, let's say they're making the same amount of money.

Yes or no?

No. Smart is the type of player who helps contending teams win, Wiggins is not, he’s they type of player who puts up empty stat lines.

I say no.  Wiggins isn't committed to defense and hasn't learned to make his teammates better.  He was also upset about being the "3rd option" in Minnesota last season.  It's very alarming that his efficiency didn't improve with less shot attempts and better talent around him.  How would he handle playing less minutes on a roster stacked with better wings?

At the end of the day it appears Wiggins lacks the drive necessary to be a great player.  Brad is a great coach but he's been consistently surrounded by players who are extremely competitive.  I think Wiggins would alienate himself rather quickly with our team.

You have to understand the Celtics salary cap situation.

Wiggins is making 25 million dollars a year.

A trade for Wiggins would require salary matching.  So you'd have to throw half the roster including Smart to match salaries.  That means you'd be giving up either a major piece - Gordon Hayward, Kyrie Irving, etc.  Or ALL the role players - Baynes 5m, Morris 5m, etc. plus maybe 1 of Brown or Tatum for Wiggins.

Not to mention that the luxury tax implications means the Celtics are going significantly into the tax for a player that they don't need right now.  We currently have Tatum, Brown, and Hayward, and Morris to play on the wings.

He clearly stated that in this exercise they're making even money.

I'd keep Smart because he provides a need and our team is in title contention mode.

You may have missed it, but this is addressed in the actual question from the OP:
"for the sake of the hypothetical, let's say they're making the same amount of money."

Given our roster? Nope. Smart brings playmaking and tough defense. Meanwhile, we’ve already got what Wiggins brings in spades, namely shotmaking and isolation scoring. If this was the Celtics from 2 years ago (IT Celtics with Bradley and crowder), then I could see Wiggins being a better fit than Smart.

It’s a shame how Wiggins career trajectory has gone so far. I think CBS could get a lot out of him, particularly more efficiency. But I guess he’ll continue to “languish” in Minny

No.  We have plenty of scorers, and Wiggins doesn't do very much apart from score.

17.7 PPG on 15.9 FGA? That is horrendous efficiency.

Smart may be one of the worst scorers, but he makes up with his defense, leadership, and his underrated passing. If we're taking into the sake of the argument value-wise? Sure, Wiggins may have more value due to being a scoring wing, but his value plummeted.

When your shooting splits are 44/33/64, those buckets aren't helping anyone but the opponent, especially considering his lack luster defense, and his inability to make smart decisions. Even if Butler has been frustrated, it isn't just him, or Thibs, but the fact he came out and expressed frustration at being the '3rd option.'

Smart gives something Wiggins couldn't dream of giving.

Granted Wiggins is the better scorer. But we have Kyrie, Tatum, Hayward, and Brown.

I'll pass.

Wiggins has garnered a lot of hate, but it's only because of the fact he's getting paid like a max player, but plays like the 3rd, albeit; pretty badly in his role.
