Fantastic news.

Now my pipe dream is to get Smart back on a 4 year 36/40 mil deal...Semi wishful thinking. Fingers crossed.

Pun intended ;) ;D?

2+1 at $7 million per would be my hope.

I see that. But then, year 3 and 4 of a 36-40 deal could look very good to the Cs or give the team a tradeable deal, especially if the caps keep rising.
I think when taken half of what you hoped ($15 million) means being more fair to the player giving him a chance at FA again sooner. Which is why I like 2+1.

Phoenix just paid Ariza, Dallas is going to pay Jordan. Don’t know what Indy will do, but is the market for Smart already drying up??

UH OH... Blakely is reporting this?? Welp bye Baynes...

 :P

I honestly can't remember the last time Blakely reported something breaking or accurate.  Broken clocks and all that.

But this is great news.  Baynes was a huge part of our starting unit's top-notch defense.  He's going to have a solid upcoming season - the basic stats/numbers may not reflect an improvement, but we have continuity and he knows exactly what his role is.  And he does that role extremely well.  Welcome back Baynes!

So we are adding Williams, Hayward, and a healthy Kyrie to our roster.

Nice.

Just saying that $10 mill four years from now might be a good contract  for the Cs - if Smart would sign it.

Idk how much money will be out there next year, but if Smart really thinks he can get $15 in a better market, and wants to be back in the market, he might just sign the QO.

Indy is paying McDermott enough to probably make it tough for them to pay more than we can afford for Smart.

They could be a nice trading partner for Morris, however.

Also looking around, there haven't been many teams that made too much sense to offer him big money and some are already spending themselves out of the idea with other contracts.  PHX, Dallas,  Pacers, Nuggets were some of the only teams that made sense to me and they already have taken themselves out of it it seems.

The Kings are really the only team that makes sense it seems.

second year player option ?

Well that dampers the contract but oh well. It's all in for Banner 18 next year regardless.

It doesn’t damper it much. Baynes seems to value comfort over maximizing his salary.

Yeah.  He signed quick and he seems to have close friends on the team in Theis and Hayward.

Probably. There wasn't a lot of free cap to go around to start with and people here are over-valuing Smart. Teams have the leverage this off-season.

I can still squeeze Smart into a 4 year $39.4 MM contract and still be under the luxury tax by a sliver after stretching Nader, letting Monroe walk, signing Bird at his QO, and keeping Morris. He should take it if offered rather than the QO and the risk attached thereto.

Wasn't someone around here being adamant that Baynes was going to be the "odd man out", or something along those lines?

Oops.....

That would make for a very nice offseason. If that happens I wonder what they will do with Morris. He’d have played a lot less in the playoffs if we had Hayward and Theis this year. Wonder if they’ll move him for a little salary relief and maybe a future pick.

I think is a more important signing than Smart. They need him vs the bigs they're going to have to deal with.  I think they could have brought someone else in but Baynes is their best option and returns at a reasonable price.
