This is great news.  I was worried another team would offer him a lot more than we could.

I wonder if shooting threes will be a regular part of his game next season.  He was 11 for 23 in the playoffs.

With Horford, Baynes, Theis, and Williamson, we'll have plenty of depth at big.

Just re-sign Smart and we're ready for next season.

Baynes probably looking for that bigger payday next season. Getting him back is great though.

Yeah, $5.5mil is just north of a 120% raise.  Very reasonable and glad to have him back.  It's gonna be tough to retain Smart without paying the luxury tax, though.

Free agent center Aron Baynes has agreed to a two-year, $11M deal to return to the Boston Celtics, league sources tell Yahoo.

Reasonable deal. Great piece of business.

Made me Lol for some reason.

Have you seen anything that tells us what the market is for him?

Nope, but even extending a wide range leaves us over the tax barring other moves.

Does anyone know how much we can pay Smart without going over the luxury tax assuming no other moves?

Hopefully I'm not corrected on this, but I've got ~$8 mil.  In that case, I believe we can still remain under the apron even if Smart is paid ~12 mil.

This will be with the full taxpayer MLE if the number reported is accurate. The Celtics are $13 million shy of the hardcap as of now.  However, if Smart signs for under $13 million in year 1, and/or another player is moved, the Celtics can instead use only a portion of the non-taxpayer mid-level and have a shade over $3 million of it to use elsewhere (ideally signing Jabari Bird to a 4-year deal for starters).

My guess is it’s slightly lower than $11 million. A non-Bird deal is what, $10.8 million? I can’t imagine we’d sacrifice significant flexibility for less than $100k this season.

second year player option ?

Well that dampers the contract but oh well. It's all in for Banner 18 next year regardless.

It doesn’t damper it much. Baynes seems to value comfort over maximizing his salary.

Is it a player option? I would be surprised, as that means he will not be tradeable this season, and Ainge doesn’t like to give up flexibility if he can avoid it.

yup

Player option per Shams.

I'd be shocked if Cs go into luxury tax. If Smart gets a big deal, then he's gone and we buy someone else. Doubt anyone's paying him big money. Middle deal, then someone's moved (Morris?). Else Smart takes the QO with a lot better market for FAs next season.

Fantastic news.

Now my pipe dream is to get Smart back on a 4 year 36/40 mil deal...Semi wishful thinking. Fingers crossed.

Good news. I was feeling pretty sure he was gone for the MLE somewhere.

Keith Smith reporting the second year is a player option. Shams reporting same.

2+1 at $7 million per would be my hope.

I see that. But then, year 3 and 4 of a 36-40 deal could look very good to the Cs or give the team a tradeable deal, especially if the caps keep rising.
